I only read Clear and Present Danger but loved the film too. Clancy impacted books, films and videogames in a huge way with his crazy attention for detail, yet I dont think he'll have a replacement.

Only thing comparable is that Clancy was a virtual Michael Crichton of military and government intelligence despite never working for either.

Spent my whole life in the military and his books just worked for me, Red Storm Rising was just outstanding considering the World at that time

Bradford

I'm not a reader, but am a gamer.

I know him from the game Splinter Cell

What got me was how futuristic the weaponry seemed in his novels and yet it was all the brand new tech that most if not all people outside of the military knew about. Sometimes though, he really was ahead of his time, but a lot of it was on the money.

I get the feeling the US military borrowd a few ideas from him

His later books were apparently ghost-written, based on plot outlines by Clancy, and it showed.

From the Wiki page on Ghostwriting:

"Many of action writer Tom Clancy's books from the 2000s bear the names of two people on their covers, with Clancy's name in larger print and the other author's name in smaller print. Various books bearing Clancy's name were written by different authors under the same pseudonym. The first two books in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell franchise were written by Raymond Benson under the pseudonym David Michaels."
