US Government shutdown?

They don't have enough money to run all the non essential government services so they've told people not to come into work.

More worryingly they are approaching the debt ceiling again and unless they agree to raise it (which they probably will do at the 11th hour) they'll default on their debt.

Basically the republican right hates the Obamacare plan and is holding the country hostage to get rid of it. Because they believe healthcare shouldn't be free, only if you can afford it.

It all becomes important, if not essential, at some point. Street cleaning may not be immediately essential but rubbish collection is.

US federal law requires the Senate to set an annual budget by midnight on 30th Sept yearly.

Failure to do so causes a set of emergency measures to kick in. The Republicans have refused to accept the Presidents budget (they did it last year too) and Obama has called their bluff.
