Christmas decorations

No one has any spare cash these days so what could you use around the home to make your own xmas decs ?

apart from my spud idea........which i intend to patent.....be warned

Cheap photocopying paper (pound shop quality) would make a squillion paper snowflakes which could be attached to thread and strung all over the place. For a few pence extra you could add some silver glitter

in my own little world :-)

I have loads of salt dough decorations at Christmas and my son makes new ones every year - they're cheap and fun to make. We roll the dough out and use cookie cutters, (make a hole at the top before they dry and you can hang them) and then he paints and glitters them

We've also used it more like modelling clay to make snowmen and angels.

Mind you - the glitter hangs around until at least Easter!!!

Home made Biscuits with icing and silver balls look nice , stars look nice. And gingerbread men look nice , Can make home made little candy canes too .. where I take dogs down the beach I get bags of fir cones and put glitter and ribbons to tie on thay look nice . Cinnamon sticks tied together look nice ... also slices of orange lemon dried in oven can look nice tied on with red ribbons ,

I get holly which grows in abundance round here and fir cones......they look lovely made into a garland with red ribbon etc

(nylon tent rope is good to use to wrapped the stuff around)

Orange and clove pomanders,

decorated with some red or green ribbon make scented, pretty tree ornaments, or have a few in a bowl, after Christmas fantastic in your wardrobes, or drawers as they repel moths, and nice scent.

Google orange/clove pomanders.

Decorated pine cones, collect them from the woods or park, dry them out in airing cupboard or over radiators, till they open fully, roll through a dish of glue, so just the tips get glued, then sprinkle with glitter, hang on tree, or in garlands, pine scent and glittery.

How are you making the advent calendars?

My dad buys little presents for all the grandons every year and they alays just come in a "lucky dip bag" they get to chose one a day when they open their advent calendar - would be great to have something better.

I got moaned at by my family for not bothering , even with a tree...

So "when i was working"

i bought myself a huge snow white xmas tree that is one of those that you stick on a pole....

Its up for 3 days and then back in its box.....

How are you making the advent calendars?

i'm not sure yet - my sister is the creative brains behind the project lol

but my mum has one that is a large felt wall hanging with little pockets that you can put little chocolates or toys in, and a bigger one for the 25th. i think it might be like that.

Last year I bought an advent calendar for my nieces and nephews, from a stall in Liverpool, they were cheap. but most of the windows were boarded up and all the chockies had been stolen !

We get big fir cones & tiny teracotta pots, paint them, glue them together & make mini Christmas trees for the grandparents instead of cards. Daughter loves covering them in glitter!

I'm making pom pomp garlens for the tree this year.

Poundshop r doing make ur own photo calendars.

Oooo and we're making bath bombs and homemade truffels with my mates kids for their mums.

Yes I do love Christmas a little too much for a grown up!!

I'm not sure if I'm going to do Christmas decorations this year however if I do I have some custom made baubles produced from my 360 x 180º panoramic photographs. They get remapped using an add in from photoshop so once printed you can fold and glue then into geodesic balls.

I'm quite crafty so I've made the salt dough tree decs, stockings, garlands etc.

My favourite one so far has to be the reusable advent calendar though!

One large piece of felt cut into a shape (we did a tree) and 25 felt pockets and numbers sewn on in a contrasting felt. Some days there's sweets in it, we've put tickets for panto in it, clues for wee treasure hunts etc.

Will be trying our hands at more diy this year

I remember making the angel for the top of the tree out of a toilet roll and sticky back plastic, I think more families should do this as I used to love doing it with my mum & sister. I suppose people are too busy at times though.

Advent calendar on the cheap.

Get yourself 24 small box`s,paint them green to make the tree.

stack in the shape of a pyramid/xmas tree.(triangle)

Paint little decorations on each box to add colour (top one is a star)

Number the box`s for each day.

Fill with gifts/chocolates or what ever you like.

Make the base out of an old cornflake box decorated to suit.

Each one can be personalised and kept for next year.

Cheap cheerful and gives the kids fun to make them as well as opening them.

We did this as well! We all had a carrier bag each in which to store our efforts until they were long enough to hang. And they weren't foil paper chains but the old fashioned matt sugar paper type. It really helped build up our anticipation seeing our chains grow to then end up hanging across the ceiling.

Things are much glitzier now - although there seems to be a desire by many to return to old values and a more simplistic approach to the festive season.

Apart from ones given as gifts,every decoration on my tree at Christmas is handmade..even down to strings of popcorn as garlands( they keep for years).Pinecones,icylolly sticks..made awesome snowflake decorations using the glue from hotglue sticks and glitter...

Brought one of my traditions from back home over when I moved to the UK and everyone thought I was mad..LOL...a tree decorating party,entrance was a handmade decoration for the tree and then we strung popcorn..
