"any one know what a tax code 944L means ... is this an emergency tax code or something as I have been in my current employment for many years ..so it seems odd ?" It's the basic tax code for this financial year. If you had a different code last year then it's not an emergency code. It can be used as an emergency code but only if HMRC are seeking more info

"any one know what a tax code 944L means ... is this an emergency tax code or something as I have been in my current employment for many years ..so it seems odd ?" Yes. Although my knowledge is not up to date I do not believe that the the tax=code system has been changed. So I am confident in being correct. The 944 relates to the amount of money you can earn without paying tax. You add a 0 to the end and your allowance is somewhere between £9440.00 and £9449.99. The L says you are in the Lower tax allowance group. Emergency codes have an X prefix and mean you get assigned to the lowest L band until your code is confirmed. However X codes can be suffixed with "week 1 month 1" than all your income will be taxed at the appropriate rate until a tax-code is issued. There is also a H bracket, it stands for Higher (married people used to get that before married allowances were removed). Dont know if it is still used but I doubt its been thrown away.
