"Ours are driving us nuts .., They used to go off with steam from a bath or shower and you would have to get through the door pretty smartish before they went off . We got them changed and now we can only grill, roast , fry and use the toaster with the front and back door and all the windows in the house open which is fine in the summer . Other than smash them off the ceiling what can we do ?. They are mains powered sporn of the devil !!!!!" Sounds like they even installed in a draw point. Are they smoke and if they are change them for heat detectors. I also used to find the more expensive ones had less false alarms. Brk and airco usually have loads of info on there web site.

If they're mains interlinked or controlled by a panel then you should have a heat detector in the kitchen rather than a smoke so that it doesn't get set off by cooking.

" Steam won't set off a heat detector, they're usually triggered at about 80 degrees or by a rapid temp rise. Some optical detectors can be sensitive enough to be set off by steam though. What make are the detectors?

They also do a combined unit which is both smoke and heat. These need both to set them off

"Rectangular " Ah, the round ones are dead easy to change, they just slide off the base and you could easily swap the smoke for a heat. If you take it down is there a little clip in plug with three wires disappearing into the ceiling?

"Yes, they are mains . Otherwise they would no longer be there but in the land fill somewhere ." Ha ha! If you can find an EI heat detector it should just be a straight swap and will fit on the existing base, unless they've changed the fly lead for some reason. Steam shouldn't be setting off an ionisation detector though, it's usually optical ones that have that problem.
