Friday Night 1989

Inspired by a song, it gave me very, very fond memories of where I would have been on a Friday night in 89, 90 and 91.

West End Bar, Birmingham dressed in my levis, loafers, white tshirt, burgundy, drinking, listening and dancing to some class indie tunes before moving on to The Kipper Club until 2am.

Where were you on a Friday night in 1989?

Not to far away - in those years I reckon it would have been the Pot of Beer, Ship a Shore, Pen and Wig or possibly the barrel Organ. After that it was either Edwards or Snobs or the Hummingbird.

Wht/where was the Kipper Bar? Rings a bell but the moemory is failing!

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Probably nowhere exciting. I lived in a rural area and had overly protective parents.

Oh wow! Yes, the ship ashore was a favourite too. Kipper club was upstairs in the small room at the hummingbird. Downstairs was mainly goth/rock then. Edwards, The Void was also a fave as was Snobs. I think Snobs is still going as an indie club now. do you remember the menagerie at the hummingbird on a Saturday night? X

Menagerie is the best club night I've ever been too. Many a happy night there.

Yes Snobs s still going (or was last time oi was back) Edwards burnt down and the new one is awful.

Which floor of the Ship? I was always in the middle bar.

Tin tins became a gay club and was the only club in brum open until 6am in about 1991/92. We used to go there when we discovered rave/dance and drugs. I remember all my male friends being terrified of going to the loo so they used to come to the ladies with me

Edwards on a Friday, menagerie on a Saturday. You are so right, best club ever. Random music. My mate was one of the DJs. I think it was the middle at the ship too and the bottom at the west end bar. Also, bonkers did a decent indie night for a couple of years then it went rave

The Ship was a great pub, quality indie down stairs and 60's rock n roll and all the rockabillys upstairs - always struck me as a bizare mix and surprised it never ended in tears.

I loved that you never knew what you'd get at menagerie, the fact it was an indie club but you'd see Napalm death drinking there says it all. Birmingham really struggled whjen it lost that place and the Barrell Organ as it fell off both ends of the live gigging spectrum for a good decade.

My god I'm in danger of getting nostalgic for Brum. I'm back later in the year to relive my youth and see the Ned's

The Hummingbird (or the bird to the regulars) was the classiest, most random, shit hole of a great club. Such a mix of people, music genres. I went to see The Specials tjrre about 4 years ago just before it closed its doors forever. Such a shame

Yes I'm not sure why I'm not calling it the 'bird. I think it is open again. The Acadamy has moved to what was the Dome (and is a surprisingly good venue) but think someone else has taken over the 'bird. My first ever gig there was the wonder stuff just before they release HUP, not sure what the last one I went to there was. Probably Carter around 5 years ago...

Me too only she would have been 4 months old, and probably watching flash dance on video because it would help her sleep.
