Almost feel like starting to smoke again, just for the month. Don't like being told what to do.

Gave up for 12 years, started again when they banned it in pubs. Been on the ecig since last Christmas.

Smoking has a personal cost and a nationwide cost. The cost of treating smoking related illnesses in this country is huge, and the cost to people, and to their families, when someone is dying from a smoking related illness, is also huge.

STOPober comes with NHS support so google online for your packs to help you quit smoking.

Alternatively continue smoking and perhaps look forward to the days when you too can join many in having your home fitted with an oxygen concentrator, and metres of tubing to enable you to shuffle from one room to another in your home, sporting the very latest cannula or mask. That's of course if you have the lung capacity to mobilise...

I don't smoke, not since my dad caught me as a school girl and threatened to take me to silken hospice to see people dying from it but I have to say one of the saddest things was seeing my nan hooked up to an oxygen machine in her home.

Unfortunately for her the addiction was so strong and she was too ill to survive giving up (the doctor said as much) and so she continued to smoke until she died just over a year ago of cancer.

Although I have more than one personal story about losing people who smoke I am mot one to berate smokers. They know the risks, they are high promoted. Like everything the realisation has to come from within or you end up resenting giving up.

Although the cost is dwarfed by the tax revenues generated - and some (like my gran who died aged 90 of natural causes unrelated to smoking for probably 75 yrs) people live longer than fitness freaks who die of heart conditions, non smoking related illnesses and getting hit by a bus!!

But in the spirit of Evie's OP - I shall stop working as hard as I have this month and have some more fun! And also stop giving my cigs to those wishing to quit - and also kindly take any spares they have off their hands at the end of the month!

So all the tax generated through the sale of tobacco goes straight into the NHS?

Doubtful, otherwise one may assume that all tax generated through alcohol goes the same way? Perhaps all VAT on child-related products goes towards our schools?

Yes, the ones on sale from petrol stations and in Morisons are not too good, but ones that do not look like a fag larger battery and larger, re-fillable head are.

There's virtually no hypothecation of taxes in the UK.

Titz Towers, North Notts

I only smoke when I'm dressed and out and about, so at 2-3 a week I don't feel the need to give much up.

On the topic of health costs and so on, has anyone else seen Yes Minister where Hacker and Appleby are arguing about the benefits of this?
