On the virgin train to Birmingham and it was delayed for 15minutes because the driver had a nose bleed.

That`s a new one.

Any other strange reason for delays out there?

Newcastle-under-Lyme

We were delayed as the train in front of us had a problem with its door lock system not working. It was a different company's train so they would be claiming compensation according to the conductor.

"sheep on the track ...oh yes !! "
ex railway signalman you would believe how often this happens especialy when prices of sheep are low at market unexplained hole in fence 2-3 sheep hit by train nice compo claim off the railway kerching for the farmer

Best one I had was a driver stoping to report hitting a greenhouse that two pikeys were carrying off from some allotments !

You wouldnt say that if you had to deal with the aftermath of a train hitting someone. I have, didnt need a bodybag just a squeegy.

Leaves on the line is a perennial favourite of the east coast main line

It's the wrong type of snow was another after it rendered an entire fleet of high speed trains useless

Yes it is! I was a railworker during the IRA campaigns in the early 90's we were getting coded bomb threats daily and we found 7 actual explosive devices left in 3 London stations during that period

Thats right, the wet leaves get mulched by the weight of the bogie and can get into the braking systems

If this is the case are you allowed to claim compensation off the train company for making you late?

Signal failures.

To this day, i still find this baffling. Given how dependant the rail system is on signals, you'd think each one would have some sort of backup which tripped on the moment the main signal failed for whatever reason.

Or is that too much to expect?

That would depend on what caused main signal failure...

If it was something on the line, that prevented signals being sent, surely a backup would be effected the same way??

If something happens on the track, that is what gets blamed for the delay correct? Fatality on the track might cause signals to slow down or prevent trains, but the signals don't get blamed for that.

What i meant above was an actual signal failure, which seems to be the cause of many train delays.

Don't know if that made anymore sense.

The majority of the signals now are fibre optic and computer controlled so dont tend to fail that often. The older suburban lines can still use the old copper wire carrier cables, these would fail constantly due to pikeys knicking the cables.

Funny. They are waiting usually for the driver or the conductor who is still doing his paperwork from his previous drive.

Unless there is a buffet or dining car then its 99.9% waiting for catering staff

that would be the driver who is subject to no notice drugs and alcohol test with one result should his breathalyzer show above half the car driving limit plus any other member of staff who interacts with them and doesent report them for being d*unk .but go on make an unfounded allegation even if its in jest
