As a former country boy, best advice is embrace the countryside, get to know locals and even join in with events. Take up a country sport ( I still love shooting even now), visit the local ale house. I love the countryside and have to say community spirit is usually great.

I wish you every happiness and love in your new home

Living in the sticks in an big old house and I love it but....

Be seriously good at DIY as these places are money pits.

Enjoy the sound of cockerels in the morning,

Yes we did just got to realise can't do it all at once it's got storage heaters at the moment I think the first thing is to decide what to change it to lpg or oil central heating

Oil is a fortune, when we came here ten years ago it was 28p per litre now it's around 57p, but if you do get onto boilerjuice to order

You can get gas if their s a main nearby. My quote was about £1000 to get connected (digging etc) and then around £1500 to change the boiler etc,

I didnt think the savings justified the cost.

Currently the spend on oil is around £1500 a year.

Get used to old school, ie no t shirts in winter, it's jumpers and socks indoors

Start either at local pub or farm and ask farmer if they can help your son to learn. I taught loads of kids and adults over the years and one of the guns once they know you will show you the ropes. Best advice is buy soon warm and water proof clothes and a good pair of boots, no one is happy when you are cold and wet

Luckily I know some of the local farmers because I work in agriculture so hopefully bit of a head start

No chance of gas near by, I suppose it's just one of the compromises about living in the countryside along with no phone signal and really slow internet

Our friends moved out of town into a lovely cottage in a local village.

Their only regrets are only having one bathroom as when family visit that is not an enjoyable sharing experience at all.

Also the cost of taxis. Their social circle live in town and whilst picking them up to bring into town is something we all happily do the £16 to £20 taxi fare home is a bit of a stinger.

Apart from that they love it, cockerels and all, including a fabulous village pub )))

Don't expect it to be quiet

All sorts of country sounds like live stock chickens owls!

Get a good outside light!

Hope the farmer does not separate the lambs from their mums near you...it's heart wrenching!

We've got lpg, we just pay by direct debit and they come and check the tank and fill it up when needed.

The only thing that put me off LPG is being tied into one supplier

As someone who has spent the best part of 8 years renovating a house:

1) Start from the top down.

2) Do the bathroom first. There is nothing like being able to take a long hot bath after spending all day working on other parts of the house.

3) Do the master bedroom next. Have somewhere nice and warm and relaxing you can retire to where you can close the door on everything else. Your sanity will thank you for it.

4) You can always make do without a kitchen - but you'll find it tough going without a toilet and a shower!

Thanks for that it's looking at the whole project as a whole that looks daunting just got to do one thing at a time
