I notice in British culture you really don't accept compliments well. In fact when you really like someone you insult them. Calling your brother smeg head as a term of endearment for example. Do you call your loved ones insulting nicknames?

Yeah, it's a peculiar trait.... We're more comfortable giving them than receiving. And using our fabled sense of humour to give a compliment without it sounding like one, as you describe.

My son said i looked like a grisly bear the other day and he calls me tubbs, from the league of gentlemen.

I dont get that many compliments, if someone on here says i look nice or they like my pics, i say thanks, but if they say i look beautiful i tell them im not, im just ordinary.

I can generally tell by messages guys send whether it's genuine or not. All of us ladies get the 'your absolutely stunning, are you available to meet' and I expect most of us are rather cynical about the sincerity of those kind of messages

from what I have gathered over the 18 years i have lived in The UK its the insincerity that annoys people with compliments like this. Im forever getting the piss taken over the whole "have a nice day" thing but lighten up people. Its only a verbal smile. .. it doesn't hurt anyone

If a woman only receives compliments online regarding her looks and/or figure and rarely offline, then she can safely assume the persons giving them only want to get between her legs

There is a fantastic book called "Watching the British" by Kate Fox an Anthropologist. It goes into the hidden rules of British behaviour. Hilarious read starts of with her doing an experiment and bumps into everyone in the street. The Brits tend to say sorry when its not their fault. Compliments are another topic in the book so is buying rounds in a pub

I am so going to read that one of my favourite authors is Bill Bryson. He is a kindred spirit. It was ultimate culture shock when I moved here from my southern American culture and I will never adjust to some of your ways. My attitude towards compliments does not make me naive.. its just not the British attitude.

I think in our culture we struggle with compliment receiving. I used to be quite bad at it (f) but am getting better.

Have to say we have to take them in the context/surrounding they are in. For instance on here i would assume an ulterior motive if someone looked at my pic and said i had a fab pussy, however when on a meet and the guy said it i was like ooooh thanks , i mean he'd actually seen/experienced it....

I find I can take a compliment but then feel the urge to downplay it... Like if someone says they like my dress I am quick to call it old or cheap or immediately volunteer additional information about where I got it etc. I need to learn to just say thanks!

I appreciate a compliment. its always nice to hear but a string of compliments from one person with no other real conversation makes me uncomfortable and turned off.
