best economical small car

My car died today and its going to cost me £500 to have it repaired. Its only 8 years old but it cost me £500 last year too. So I think its time to buy a new or relatively new car. I dont do a lot of mileage, max 5k a year, if that. Do any of you have any suggestions/recommendations please?

I've got a Yaris, it is as reliable as clockwork, costs next to nothing to run and I don't intend to take up delivering Grand Pianos for a living. Not with these hands. You could do worse than to get one.

im looking at a 1.5 clio diesel (probably a few years old, thinking about 02/03)

can get one for a little over £2k at that age, 70mpg without trying

£30 a year tax

cheap insurance

engines are very good in them.

Peugeot 206 at the moment. I was also looking at Ford but not sure. I have no interest in cars, don't care what it looks like, I just want it to be reliable and cheap. I didn't realise until today that you only pay £20 per year road tax on some! X

Just googled it and it seems only to apply to Peugeots? I don't really want another Peugeot but thank you for your suggestion x

I enquirer about leasing today and was really put off. The car has to be returned in mint condition otherwise you have to pay for the repairs. Don't think any car will be mint after 3 years. Thanks for suggestion though

Another vote for the Yaris. I have the mark 2 version with a 1 litre engine. Its comfortable, reliable, roomy, looks good and is very economical, I average 57-60 mpg however I would suggest a slightly larger engine would be better as the mileage drops when I go on motorways.

still say a mid sized engine diesel is the best way forward for you

Thats fine for the motorway! you really dont need much umph and not worth you paying extra for what you wont use

go for an older BMW mine has 234k on the clock and starts 1st time every time BMW's are company cars so they have a full service history with them

Hyundai amica they just run and run 1 litre £10 gets you about 90-100 miles and they are nice and high to get into x

If you're doing less than 12k miles a year and barely using the motorway avoid a diesel, as previously posted, you'll have mega problems with the DPF and EGR systems, resulting in huge repair bills.

The Toyota Yaris is an excellent choice but I'm going to throw a spanner in the works. Look at an Alfa MiTo their Twinair engines are super economical and free road tax, they also have plenty of poke when you need it and you also get Italian style.

Don't worry about reliability either as they're pretty much sorted as ling as you service them regularly and there's loads of good independent Alfa specialists around...

If you're going Diesel, avoid a car with a DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter - which is possibly most Diesel cars made 2009 onwards. Or find a car what has had the bypass done on it and the DPF removed.

Runs almost on fresh air

Goes for miles n miles n miles on a teaspoon of fuel

I'm on my second one n will upgrade to another one next year

NICE array of colour choices tooo

Young people consider them 'cool ' - one said to me it's like a modern version of the mini!

Avoid French, they all go wrong at 50k!! Japanese is the way forward. With the mileage that you are doing, a 4-5 year old car with highish mileage maybe a plan. Suzuki have some cracking offers on, second hand Yaris' also are high on our list when we replace our second car. Good luck

Thing is though, we don't have to be 'experts' a lot of the advice given is from peoples own experiences and you only need to google DPF fault or EGR fault and you'll see for yourself that nearly all modern turbo diesel cars suffer these two faults, even the ones given frequent motorway blasts.

My second car is a diesel and I had both within the first year of owning it, they were subsequently removed and the engine computer remapped at a fraction of the cost of replacing the parts. It may seem like a tangent but its sound advice and worth knowing when looking for a new car...

You can get a 54 plate 1.3 Yaris with 60k for 1,475 or a 04 plate 1.4 diesel for 1600 so its not cheap.

A Yaris might be the best suggestion - Toyotas are very reliable, in my opinion.

Personally, I wouldn't be without my Smart - but it is a bit of an acquired taste.

Magane 1.5 dci is also £30 not known for their reliability so you have to be careful what you buy. but It's a decent size car with good electrics and keyless if you get the right one (buttons on handles)

The Citroën c2 (maybe c1) is £20 tax

The fiesta 1.4 tdci is also £30 but make sure it has a good clutch the dual mass is expensive

unfortunately not.

see, the scrappage scheme that was set up as put used car prices in a bubble, even now, because a lot of decent used cars were destroyed by those that could afford to buy new anyway, they just got more for wrecking them than they would have for selling them on, supply and demand as it were.

secondly, smaler cars will always now be at a premium, with running costs being so expensive now.

i have looked on ebay and autotrader and cant find one for less than the OP has been offered one for.

Ive got a 2011 merc slk amg and a 2009 corsa.slk has broke down twice and stupid running costs.but done double the mileage in my corsa and never let me down once and really cheap to run aswell

This site is very helpful if you are car searching, goto Vehicle Enquiry hit next then enter the reg and make of any car, will give you the engine size, fuel type, year but more importantly the exact cost of 6 and 12mth tax, plus how much tax is left on it

This is a great source for info, and the two cars I would have seggested are no1&2 in the best small hatch

The Hyundai I10 and the Kia Picanto, they are basically the same car but look slightly differrent and do drive differently.

They have great warrenties 5 and 7 and start at £7k new, both £20 RFL and use the same 1.2 engine, which thinks its a 1.5 and great on fuel, you also get lots of kit for your buck

btw there is a reason Skoda is the brand with the number one slot in terms of customer satisfaction. They never go wrong and the dealers are brilliant.
