i dont have kids but i know from my sister that schools can be fairly demanding for money for things.

i like how they put in letters that its a donation but if you dont pay your child has to sit out or in another class while all their friends go on the trip

£58 for a tyre, a reflector and a brake check?

I have a bag full of rear reflectors you can have, a BMX tyre can be had for around £10 and the brakes are a 5 minute job (I have six bikes to maintain!)

It will save her 300 quid. I don't mean take a bat to her leg, just maybe push her too hard on the swings or bet her she can't do a backflip off a table

That said to not keep a bike, even a kid's bike well maintained is asking for trouble, brakes failing doesn't end well.

Halfords have a, to put it politely, questionable reputation for repairs. lots of people make the same mistake - they are everywhere so therefore the assumption is that they must be good. And while they have got better, they are expensive and that quote is criminal. You will need tyre levers as well to get the tyre off.

Have you got a local independant shop, a lot would look at the front brake for a nominal amount.

you don't actually have to pay. if you refuse to pay they can only cancel the trip for all or the school must pay for those who are unable or unwilling to pay. they may not discriminate against any child who wants to go.

A lot is to do with the LA the school is in. The primary school mine go to is in Tameside and all they ever want is money! 2 nights 40miles up the road cost £245 two years ago, I'm dreading getting the letter for the my middle one who is due this trip next summer. All the trips are very expensive. Don't think I've ever paid less than £15 for one. And music lessons, and after school sport also comes at an extra cost.

My eldest goes to high school across the boarder under Manchester city council and they are brilliant!! Her school seems to subsidise everything! Several free trips, all after school actives are free, as are music lessons. She went away last week for a residential and it only cost £40.

Amazes me how they can differ so much when they are less than a mile apart...

Yeesh what happened to kids getting paper rounds or little kp jobs? I worked for my school trips cause my parents refused forking out 300 for a trip that wasnt needed with people I didnt like. My youngest sister at 15 is now working the chicken sheds to earn for her trips. Granted if the kids are under 13 fair enough not much can be done but hell my son once he comes of age will be getting a wee part time job to help fund his trips cause thats what 12years away imaginw the prices then! :/

We've done this. They've been working and saving to pay towards their residentials.

Two weeks into the term and we're now at just over £600 with more 'contributions' to come for further educational visits.

They even tried to charge for recorder lessons - no idiot would ever pay for that torture surely?

Me too. Within 2 weeks of starting the school a letter for a £700 trip to France was sent home then within a week a £800 ski trip letter arrived and if I'm honest they're the cheap ones!! There's a couple of 'educational' trips linked to certain gcses that come in at around. £2000. She won't be going on them either
