I guess it depends what the original post is. Yes sometimes I think people go on a crusade against the OP somewhat unfairly. However if the post is something like

"I've been on this site for 6 months now trying to cheat on my wife and nobody will help me. Why?"

or

"Even the dogs and the fat girls on here wont fuck me, what's with that?"

then I think they're asking for it!

So, by the same token is someone who posts "I'm 20 stone, i cant stop shoving cake and mars bars in me gob, yet i cant seem to lose weight, please help" also asking for it?

I for one am glad you posted this thread. I don't come on much but when I do I mostly see blatant negativity amongst the Forums for no good reason at all and it's frustrating and disappointing. There are, sadly, a few cliques operating on here and it's never tackled at all, from what I've seen so far anyway.

Infact it seems to be the opposite at times i.e. sometimes a thread gets dire with people ganging up against the OP then the good guys come along and speak up and speak out against it.. then what happens? "Thread closed by moderator". So seemingly it's mostly ok for Forum users to have to put up with negativity from established forumites but once there's a backlash the situation changes and the thread gets closed?!

People.. where's the balanced fairness here? The balance to me seems to be way over on the negative side to me.. very disappointing to say the least.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all" That's my favourite quote, it's from Bambi. Read it and understand it.. good luck.

Just a thought, but is it at all possible that the "good guys" who've defended newbies or those being picked on have reported posts thus alerting the Mods to bullying behaviour on a thread which in turn means the thread gets closed? I know that's happened when I've reported nasty posts and appealed against the pack mentality that sometimes happens - I'd like to think I'm the (if not good, then at least reasonable) guy on a few occasions

That's a possibility and to be very honest here, I do my best to report people when I feels it's justified but to date none of the Threads I've reported about have ended up getting closed. Honestly now again I'm not just saying that to help reinforce the point I tried to make earlier (above) and this is also a factor in my annoyance with the carry on around here.

This is the internet I know, not a Democracy. But some people really should wind their distasteful necks in as there's no need to slate someone for no good reason... cioa for now x

I bet some of these long standing posters font even realise how negative they are. They are well liked by the core group and so get away with it. I think dome people should check their posts and she see if maybe they are not being a tad more negative than they thought

as usual these types of threads point fingers at the actions of others, if people ask me for my opinion I will give it straight and I dont change depending on the gender of the person and I do not go around fluttering flittering and joining in the love ins... not my thing but what others chose to do is cool. It has irritated me in the past but who am I to dictate what others do. I have learnt a lot over the years.

yeah I probably have at times ripped into someone, I have been punished for it and have mostly taken it on the chin. I do not join in the hunting in a pack but what I do see, they ain't exclusive to the longest serving forumites.

Well done and well said because opinions on a certain topic is the basis of a lot of threads yet they get abused by people with no actual interest in contributing on the subject itself. They just wade in on purpose with their crap and disrupt what is sometimes a serious discussion.. ruining it for the more sensible and composed people looking for an answer to something or for genuine advice on something important to them.

I would say that any newbie's first post is a little like 'Baptism of Fire'. From my own experience it often stems from the fact that most new forumaites do not read the Forum rules nor use the Forum search to see if their subject has already been discussed a zillion times.

I also believe that criticism and desire to be provocative depends a lot on WHO is online at the time the thread goes up!

I hope I have answered your question

Actually, the original question was whether free school dinners was a good or bad idea. Some people veered very far from that question and began criticising people for using breakfast clubs/childcare. So yeah, I would say a lot of posts were irrelevant!! Some people on here just enjoy criticising/making inflammatory/derogatory remarks for no apparent reason. Anyway, must get on, need to make tea!!!!!

I've had a read and that's definitely not the case as you say it is. Not nit-picking myself here but when I see the "keepers of the moral high ground crew" at work like they are in there I can't see how someone could turn around and say "it's all related to the subject" like you have.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Its true there are a few people on here whose only goal seems to be to criticise other posts, or post grumpy and irrelevant replies. But they tend to do that for ALL posts, not specific to one or two people, so it's easy to ignore them.

I've said this before, but compared to other forums this one is sweetness and light. The only way to get stuck in (hurr hurr) with posting on the forums is to just be yourself, and ignore the grumpy buggers and post hi-jackers. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

"There are quite a few examples of irrelevant or unnecessary criticising on the free school dinners thread. Some people just seem unable to respond to a simple question without having a go at others.

Its not irrelevant criticism though is it, its all related to the subject.

I've had a read and that's definitely not the case as you say it is. Not nit-picking myself here but when I see the "keepers of the moral high ground crew" at work like they are in there I can't see how someone could turn around and say "it's all related to the subject" like you have.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all" "

Wouldnt it be boring if everyone agreed with each other all the time.

There is a vast difference with disagreeing with somebody elses opinion and criticising or having a dig for no reason at all
