Now I have seen the adverts on the telly about it being awarded best value supermarket etc. Well monies a bit tight so I thought I'd give my local Aldi a visit earlier today. Well not much choice if I'm honest and hardly a brand name I even knew, not even an own brand Aldi item (what's that all about) anyway get to the checkout, put my shopping up including 4 plastic bags at 3p each I may add ( fecking cheek lol) Now I'm packing my bags and up comes the total £25.65p, thank you I say and put my credit card in the slot and tap out my number .... Sorry we don't take credit cards comes back the cashiers answer sorry I say and she repeats it " Aldi does not accept payment by credit card" now the queue is growing and I'm hurriedly feeling very embarrassed, sorry I said I didn't know. We take debit cards is the reply, I was just about to pay by my debit card when I swear I see the cashier look at the queue and give an eyes rolling look, now I'm a fecking annoyed. I say wait up ill pay by cash, get £30 out of my pocket more) of the eyes rolling from the cashier, I tell you what I say feck it ill go to ASDA's. put the packed bags in the trolley have the cheek to ask for my £1 back you have to put in the slot to release the trolley. Politely say thanks and leave the supermarket.

Posted on your other thread that you deleted:

I use my local Aldi every week or couple of weeks at the most.

Cheese...eggs...milk...all bargains and good quality.

The vegetables also are of reasonable quality that's in keeping with the price.I agree with the vague-pricing policy and carry my purchases home in a rucksack.

A big  from me..

Horses for courses as to whether you use it or not. For me it would be false economy as I know it would either get stuck in a cupboard or simply thrown.

Aldi is brilliant, they don't have their own brands, they sell quality products, they source products from various manufacturers, who don't spend a fortune on advertising like hienz for example.

Germans are very fussy food shoppers, and their number one in Germany, and now in UK.

If you buy any product and for any reason are not happy with it, they offer a full refund and usually a similar product to try free of charge.

The reason they used to accept cash only, is they work on a 6% profit margin,

credit card companies charge a fee for each transaction, plus a % of each sale, so no room in their small margins for absorbing those costs, same goes for carrier bags,

Aldi are one of the best payers in retailing.

Once you stop looking for certain brands, you can save 50% of your weekly shopping budget.

Which is important to me, at easter, Christmas they stock fantastic german novelties in food , plus twice a week they have special offer days, they even give you a booklet each week with forthcoming special purchase events.

Aldi flowers are brilliant, they are produced by the same growers as Marks and spencer use,

The only down side of their flowers is their position in store, usually just inside, and the heaters, over the shop doors, dehydrate their flowers, so not optimum display conditions, but if you but first thing in the morning, the flowers are about half the price of other supermarkets.

I do a weekly shop for myself and it costs between £25 and £30 most weeks, which is at least half anywhere else, so great in my opinion.

Carrier bags, if they were "free" many would end up in your bin, and in landfill.

Much better to take some boxes or bags, you already have.

I use a debit card, but I believe they now accept credit cards, as they have done a deal with banks to reduce their charges ( but as I don't ever use a credit card I cant be sure of that )

Same here...I have been using Aldi for over a year for the majority of my grocery shopping, saving on average £30 a week. As a single mum with 3 young kids it has been a huge help especially with being able to get so much fruit and veg at much cheaper prices. I bring all my own bags but if I had to pay..3 p a bag..not really going to break the bank. I also find the produce lasts longer than from Asda or Tesco. And as for name brands, who cares? I usually by stores own brand in other shops anyway....

Here's a thought and an amusing story.

Aldi was started by two brothers who each became multibillionaires through their endeavours, so obviously doing something right.

One of the brothers was an out and out recluse so much so that when he was kidnapped his kidnapper demanded proof that he had the right man before he would start to negotiate a ransom.

Some people need to realize that just because it's not a well known brand, doesn't mean its low quality.

In fact, I find most unknown brands to be cheaper but taste nicer then the popular brands

Aldi kicks ass, most of their stuff is tasty, and most is that cheap that if you don't like you haven't been robbed trying it in first place. Always buy cleaning products from there. 'Power force' i think. Does same job but for 1/3 price.

Also the toro loco tempranillo is great for 3.68 a bottle, very drinkable and fresh

Costa Blanca Spain...

Firstly we love Aldi both here in Germany and in Spain. OK I know that it is a lot different to a Tesco or Asda and there are certain things you would have to go elsewhere for, but for value and quality it is very difficult to beat. Personally I don't go much for brands these days. I think of most as nothing more than a label for people who don't know shit from clay and are too stupid to make their own minds up about any particular product.

As an aside not many people outside of Germany know that there are two different Aldi company's. The Albrecht brothers who started the chain had a disagreement about whether to sell cigarettes or not. They couldn't resolve it and eventually the company was split in Germany into Aldi north and Aldi south, with the brothers taking one company each. As it expanded internationally different country's got one or the other.

In the UK you have Aldi south with the half A on a blue background logo as opposed to the Aldi north full A on white background. I think Germany is the only country that has both.

I think the moral of this story is that we all have different tastes, budgets and ideals and so far, we are fortunate to have a relatively good choice in retail outlets compared to some.

The real danger will come when we don't have the choice left, so I just want to wave a little flag for the independents and markets, long may they live, hugz n stuff, xxxx

I tend to do my shopping in a 70/30 split between Lidl and Morrisons. Its vastly cheaper than doing the full thing at Morrisons. Aldi/Lidl dontt stock the range of things or more exotic ingredients that big supermarkets do though, hence the split shopping.

I struggle to find any difference between Aldi and Lidl even down the shop layouts. To the extent I wonder if they are the same company with different branding?

Some things are cheaper others are not but please the vast savings of 20% 30% and more just make statements look foolish as its not the case on like for like products. Saying that Aldi and Lidl do a good job and can save you money as they dont bump up your trolley with all the 2 for one offers and subtle marketing and I would bet there is far less waste with people who shop there.

Thats not actually true as Aldi import a large proportion from Europe. Now that doesn't mean its bad but its not the same and has often been reared differently. Every carcass has documentation from field to store. So all the same is not actually correct at all.

I get my big shop delivered from Ocado/Waitrose, and top up on bread, milk and tinned goods at Aldi. That way I save money, and am able to buy luxuries/quality at the same time.

I gave up food shopping at Tescos 3 years ago and have never looked back.

The Only reason Aldi did not accept Credit cards was that the companies that owned them would take ages to transfer the money into Aldi's account and they would deduct 3-5% as their cut for handling the sale.

Aldi works on very tight margins so it was uneconomical for them to accept credit cards at their shops when they were starting off and trying to expand, that's why they were originally a cash only shop. Debit cards are easier to process, pay more quickly and their charges are very low, that's why they are accepted and preferred.

Have noticed though that Aldi has started to increase their prices and offer some of the named brands and for some items the big 4 supermarkets are actually cheaper.

For a surreal experience go to the Aldi in wilmslow cheshire, their car park is crammed full of Porche's, Bentleys, Astons and Chelsea tractors.

The rich don't stay that way by squandering money.

Had to laugh at Jamie Oliver's Money Saving Meals programme yesterday. He roasted a chicken - which was nine quid! Don't think he had that from Aldi.

I think the general idea was that you eat half the chicken one day and save the rest for a chicken casserole. Erm - in my house that would be us stripping the chicken bare on the first day and wolfing down the lot, having beans on toast the next day, and leaving the bones out for a fox!

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Originally Aldi was cash only. Now they accept debit cards. This helps keep costs down. Bags have always been charged for so I use my own. They do have their own brands - their washing liquid tabs are called Almat, for example. Less choice but really do we need all that choice? No. Of course they don't do brands - another way they cut costs. I've found that the quality of the goods has improved year on year. Sticking to brands seems strange to me. Most people when they don't know what has been served to them cannit tell the difference. I save £20-30 a week shopping there. That's a hell of a saving over a year.
