All those years of me saying to him "come on then I'll take you on"

have just come back an bitten me hard on the bum

He's running at around 1hr 40 minutes pace

me around 2 hours

I've been impressed by his dedication to the training and that he's raised over £300 for the charity

Good luck to both of you. And enjoy it. 2 hours isn't a bad time at all, but a 1hr 40 is pretty impressive for a debut

"Good luck to both of you. And enjoy it. 2 hours isn't a bad time at all, but a 1hr 40 is pretty impressive for a debut"

Most of the time will be spent getting over the start line and then being able to get into your stride

Break the two hours and you're what I would class as a runner, and not a plodder

1hr 40 mins is a very good time, beats me, anyway

I think you change from plodder to runner at sub 1hr 50. This is a purely objective opinion and in no way influenced by my 1hr 49 PB! (this is tongue in cheek and not intended to belittle anyone)

I think great north is one of the better events for coping with huge volumes. There was a half in Greenwich last week where the organisers funneled 20000 runners through a 4 foot wide gate causing a huge bottleneck and people being delayed on average by close to10 minutes!

You're kidding, right ?

That's a serious risk of crushing

(My own pb is 1hr 45mins 26 seconds.... damn that 26 seconds )

I've only ever beat 2 hours once so I say I'm a fun runner - I do the runs to keep fit and raise money for charity

Though the GNR is great, I ran the London Marathon this year and that was the best experience, the crowds were was unbelievable

Kudos regardless of what time you achieve.

The time and effort you put into training and completing each event is not to be sneezed at

No. Not kidding. And 400 metres further on a second gate. Run to the beat, read the reviews on runners world or their Facebook page - its unbelievable. To avoid the crush they ended up changing the course to divert around it so £50 to get stuck in a bottleneck or run a short course!

its a village

I am doing it first time round. Only done 10 km's so far. It certainly will be an experience, not looking for time. , just hoping to finish. Raised £270 so failing is not an option. Good luck and hope you achieve your time. I will be the one crawling over the line just in front of sweepy wagon lol

Good luck and enjoy the day - the crowds as you enter and go through south shields are great

A couple of tips

1 Deliberately slow yourself down in the first mile, adrenalin will make you run too fast and you don't want to waste energy

2 Drink plenty of water today and tomorrow

No spurting allowed during a race
