How can it retain the name when privatised?

Staff can't strike about the privatisation so the strikes, if they go ahead, would be about pay and conditions.

Is the privatisation warranted? Is this the right time to do it?

Nope the privatisation is not warranted it is another monopoly that should be state controlled being released from it. Gas, Electricity, and telecoms are all still monopolies with nil competition, the Royal Mail will go the same way.

It should not retain it's name, they will strike. The union and the management are both still stuck in the 1970's.

There is no right time to do something that is not needed.

i cant understand it, personally.

the whole thing is now making money again, finally, although the letters side is not, its made up by the parcel delivery.

do they really think that a privately ran company would keep the letters side going on the scale it is (6 days a week to your door) when its at a detriment to the other sectors of the business?

if the think so then they are doing themselves a real disservice.

i for one have NOT seen improvement in ANY company that has been privatised, so for me, this is a very very bad idea, but i am open minded enough to accept i may be wrong.

I have transferred all my paperwork that needs signing over to my internet account and accept e.signatures, quicker, easier and free

not having a go at you at all, but this whole thing is the reason why everyone in the world is becoming so distant from each other.

nothing better than getting something in the post that you have to read through, sign and send back, knowing someone else is there waiting for it.

modern technology was supposed to make the world a smaller place and bring people together, but it seems it is just driving people apart instead.

people texting each other instead of phoning

emails instead of letters

facetime/skype instead of meeting.

where will it all end?

in decades to come nobody will ever need to venture out of their own front door.

wonder how long it will be until fab has a groinal attachement that you plug into your USB and get sucked off/hammered over the internet, no need for all that mucky meeting up and having sex. lol

Yes. My clients want to see the original hard copy of things like my DBS certificate and still send hard copy contracts to be signed.

royal mail posted a profit this year, just in time to make it ripe for flotation.....this profit took into account that the government had agreed to take on the liabilities....so it would have been another loss making year if these figures were included.......why should the state, therefore the taxpayer....keep funding this behemoth? Postal workers have their pay and conditions guaranteed for the three years following flotation, this would be unheard of in any other corporate sale....yet the CWU is wanting a 10 year guarantee?? This is surely an attempt to take TUPE and Royal Mail bosses just a tad too far?

Why should the state, therefore the taxpayer....keep funding this behemoth?

If government is still taking on the liabilities it's still the tax payer paying for the behemoth. The Post Office function has been separated now. Royal Mail is ripe for an overhaul but a 3 year guarantee on staff terms and conditions won't really allow that whoever buys it.

AFAIK the taxpayer is still subsidising the gas/electricity/water/train companies too, so after privatisation, its not like we are going to be free to spend thhis money however we see fit.

it will still be gulping down huge abouts of bursuries

The royal mail needs a shake up. Its top heavy and the service isn't what it was. Anyone remember reading the post overbreabreakfast?. Like all gov run things its become to top heavy and outdated. But not sure privatization is the way to go

The sale gets it....and its loss making, antiquated practices off of the public books....govt only taking on the current liabilities.

3 years is, in my opinion, a fantastic deal for postal workers, generally TUPE arrangements will not last beyond 12 months so is more than most other company employees could ever hope for.... it is a chance for a forward thinking group of directors to take the helm and steer a course that will actually get the company functioning properly.

As an aside ...The post office ltd has government bail outs until 2015 and is currently running at a 37 million pound loss so it will be interesting to see what happens to this in a couple of years time.

Royal Mail will then be able to go out and compete with other mail carriers. I work for a company who send out large volumes of mail, its cheaper for us to have it collected and distributed to RM centres than it is for RM to do it, as RM can't price competitively they have set prices

The Royal Mail is only in profit as the government agreed to take on the pension scheme deficit estimated at £4.5 bn and thereby the RM no longer had to contribute to the reduction of the deficit

This deficit will need to be funded by the taxpayer so raising £3bn is a significant reduction in this deficit - if the funds raised are put to this purpose

Obviously you are too young to remember when phoning for most people meant walking to a public telephone waiting in the rain wishing the person in the booth to please, please hurry up. If you could afford a phone you made all calls after 6 o'clock because it was cheaper. Believe me the world is a smaller and more accessible to ordinary people than it's ever been. We just take it for granted now

A few years back an academic with too much time on his hands did a sum.

If you'd bought all the Gas shares you were allowed back in Sid's day and kept them till the date of the calculation AND you were a typical gas user (2 bed semi etc), the extra you'd paid in gas bills as a result of privatisation outweighed the amount you'd have rec'd in dividends + profit when you resell the shares.

Alex Salmond has made a promise (his promises are a bit like Nick Clegg's) to re-nationalise Royal Mail in the event of a Yes vote in the Separation vote.

That's yer tax rebate fucked till 2050
