Tipping people when a good service is done.

I always tip the m.o.t guy when my car passes (mainly as relief) that its passed and not because he is lenient.

Waiters and waitress I always tip well as they get such rubbish wages.

Its always been the norm in most countries and has slowly but surely crept in here, its a good way of saying ...thank you I am all for it even knowing that there has been a sur charge in a lot of establishments that have put staff gratuity already on the bill I still give a tip to the person that has given good service.

No, I am paying for good service, and expect to receive it, if I don't receive it I complain and may ask to deduct 20% from bill or refuse to pay for what hasn't been provided, as for waiting staff earning low wages, they accept a job, knowing the rate of pay ( maybe minimum wage ) which is more than I make per hour, being self employed, which is my choice.

Nope. They get paid to do their job and they should always do it well regardless of if someone leaves a tip or not. It's called pride in your work. I don't get tipped for doing my job.

I will if I receive good service and think they deserve it.

I did a lot on holiday in Mexico though as they are so attentive and the service in bars/restaurants there and in the hotels was outstanding compared to here.

We tip in certain circumstances,if we feel someone has gone over and above what they would normally do

At the start of a holiday we've always given the hotel bar staff and waiters a good tip,they get crap pay for horrendous hrs and giving them a little extra has meant they're happy and they've taken good care of us too ......that has always made good sense to us

I tend to always tip taxi drivers, but that's it really. I will in restaurants if service is good, but will have the 10% sevice charges removed from bills if I don't believe the service is good enough.

I recently got back from India & I tipped a lot out there, but the service was outstanding.

As for tipping just because wages are crap do you tip the cashier in your Supermarket? Why tip taxi drivers and not bus drivers? Or bar staff but not the guy behind the counter in Mcdonalds? Where do you drawer the line - they all earn shit money...

I do tip, but it has to be more than normal service to warrant it.

I tip in restaurants 10% unless I get bad service! I always tip taxi drivers between £1 and £2 depending on the fare.

I thought everyone did the same. Isn't that standard?

I'd feel cheap otherwise

think about it, they usually don't pay tax, so if they are on a fiver an hour its not bad for some pin money , on top of work or dole.

Same here, I thought tipping in restaurants was the norm, I can't believe so many people are saying they don't. And always tip the hairdressers, after all they can easily make you look like a tit! Anything you can do to help make them remember you and how you like your hair cut is a good idea in my book.

We tip rarely. I dont go for this bit about poor wages its a tool used by tight employers to make us feel guilty about the crap wages they pay their staff. The wages are none of my concern the individual knew the salary when they took the job on and im not there to subsidise.

But like others have said if its due to superb service then yes but not for just doing their job

I've done the job and so have a few friends and you are not on anywhere near £5 an hour. Try £2.50-3 an hour plus maybe £10 a night in petrol money depending on the amount of deliverys you do. That was my full time job and I wasn't on the dole. I was self employed and paid tax on the wages I made and so did all the other people I know that have done the job. So maybe it is you that needs to think about it.

I tend to be over generous with waiters/ waitresses cos a lot of them are supporting themselves through Uni. It pays dividends too in terms of service etc.

My standard taxi ride- to or from town is usually £4.40 so I pay £5.00. Some cabbies do better, some worse but I seldom pay more than a fiver.

It's only money after all.

I work in a restaurant, and I never expect to be tipped. I usually am, and can easily in a 5 hour shift make around £60 in tips alone.

Many of the people that work alongside me expect to be tipped, and complain loudly when they aren't. This attitude drives me insane. We are paid a basic hourly rate, and that is what I live on, it's what I budget (badly) using, not my tips, because they are not guaranteed.

I think because I don't expect to be tipped, and still take pride in my job and work is why I take home so much extra.

As for when I'm eating out myself, I will never pay the additional 10% on a bill for service, I will always hand my server cash if I believe they have given good service.

Nope. Brand standard dictates (and trust me it is a dictatorship) that we introduce ourselves as "Good evening, my named is Katie and I'll be your server this evening".

I prefer server, waitress seems old fashioned. But that is just speaking for me!!

I would find it a bit demeaning and would struggle to use the term - besides the word means something completely different to me (IT based)

Unless I had bad service I always tip, hairdresser gets about £ 3 and I tell her to"go and have a coffee". In restaurants I tip between 5 and 10% depending on the service. It is what I am used to from where I grew up.

Just as an afterthought.

The inland revenue recognises that some occupations where a service is being provided directly to the customer may result in the person recieving a gratuity (tip) and therefore their tax allowance is reduced to take into account extra undeclared income.

In other words they are expected to recieve without declaring them approx £2K per year in tips, so their individual allowances (the amount they can earn before paying tax) is actually reduced b y that amount, so although they are working for minimal wage the percentage of tax they pay is higher than other workers on miniumum wages.

And lets face it the country is getting ruder every year, who would like to do their job and be abused by some arrogant prick who treats you like shit because you are paid minimal wage and are hoping to get a little extra cash by way of a tip of 50p?
