Frightened the life out of me too... For its time, it was really strange." I read Biddy Baxters book (she was the editor of Blue Peter and the first female childrens TV producer/editor in the UK) and she explained how we got to have eastern European kids programmes on our telly then. Basically, someone got promoted at the BBC who HATED childrens TV with a venegence, slashed the budget in half and that's all they could afford for about 3 years until this person (don't know who they were) got moved somewhere else in the Beeb! Basically, they didn't have the money to make their own programmes. Ooooh forgot another, talking of dubbed foreign kids programmes - Belle and Sebastian. Oh and The White Horses.

"My mom promised me lots for having to up sticks from a very sunny south Africa to come to England. I remember Andy Pandy as my first TV I ever saw, then nothing, fecking 3 day week, electricity shortages, panic buying at the new Tescos. For a 4 year old, all very confusing, cold, and not what I was promised!!!! " 1974 winter of discontent. Mrs is from South Africa too and have told her many tales of Britain in the seventies

"Okay, let's make me feel really old... Bill and Ben Andy Pandy The Woodentops (those well known naturist puppets!) Tales of the Riverbank Stingray (the first time round) Blue Peter, when they had the BP railway layout AND ..... Valerie Singleton!! Vision on Tom Tom (betcha can't remember that one) Z cars (when they had Zodiacs - whopee!) Basil Brush etc etc etc blah blah blah.. The connecting factor between all these? I'm old enough to be able to claim that I watched the lot in good old Hi Definition.... Black and White... ted." No Mapgie Ted ?...there used to be a certain ' slap' you carried out to The side of The set when it played up , kind of a hollow cup shape with The hand ...followed with a weighty blow The right flank of The set , this was often all that was required to turn The minute dot into a visual feast ...

"I'm one of those sad gits that used to love watching the local ITV station open up with all the local pictures and the same music playing every time. Great stuff. 'This is Southern Television broadcasting from the blah blah blah" We used to say what all of the places were and the one that sprang to mind when I first saw what you posted was the 5 bar wooden gate! " Ah yes I remember that well. The piece of music was called 'Southern Rhapsody', wonderful piece of music. At one point we also used to receive Thames from London and their theme was the nutz. What memories!
