i am dyselic not stupid ie spelling abit think this has being effected by other health problems but..if you get a message with spelling mistakes does htis put you off someone who says hello etc? i used to be ateacher and other stuff and worked hard to achive what i have done but i know sites on here such as this is abit of un nice to meet some wonderful great people over time on here but well just curous what other thinks? doesnt effect never has in anyway in regards sexual meets anyway lol

Would you like me to be sympathetic or honest? I'll can be both but you won't see it here.

The thing is I am also a little dyslexic and so when someone doesn't bother to compose their communication with a reasonable amount of care and consideration for the person trying to read it, it can be very annoying and frustrating for me to try and read it.

I often make mistakes BUT I try very hard not to. I bit of punctuation makes things much easier for the reader. As too does correct spelling. In particular there is no excuse for poor spelling when using a computer. Most if not all word processors have a spell-check built in, in fact most web browsers have spell check built in.

You may well be dyslexic but by virtue of the fact you've written the opening gambit for this forum thread you're level of dyslexia isn't too serious, so maybe you are confusing dyslexia for laziness

So the answer to your question is, as far as we are concerned 'yes' crap spelling, poor composition etc. is at best 'impolite' where 'being polite' means being helpful and considerate of others.

If we receive a message that is too difficult to read then we put in the same amount of effort to reading it as the composer put in to writing it... none

there is spell-check set on as default in IE 10. so no real excuse. we ignore people who do not make the effort, but if it was pointed out to us that the spelling was not good for a reason, we might consider messaging

as long as I can read it that is fine... it is just a case of making an effort rather that relying on "text speak" we all make mistakes sometimes (I blame mine on having a maths degree rather than an english one!!... i do numbers not words!!!)

if it gets to the stage where I have to scratch my head and have to read it 3 times, then yes by then the passion has gone and you have given me a headache!!

sometimes it is something as simple as a "paragraph" then can make the difference between something being readable and being a mess....

Ok in short yes it will hamper you a lot on here.

Again we are both dyslexic but try our best to eliminate mistakes by using spell check and such.

Again it's a fine line between genuine difficulty and not trying

Many people now use smartphones and tablets, so they maybe typos rather than spelling mistakes.

I think you can spot a thick/simple/common etc person by what they are trying to say rather than how....

That's what the original poster is getting at, spelling =good person...

as long as its not text speak i dont mind. i dont have dyslexia, just fat fingers so i cant judge someone on their spelling when mine isnt perfect either.

i know there are spell checkers but sometimes when i'm just posting on a forum i cant be arsed with checking things

It certainly can make a difference to the reader but you can limit the amount of mistakes by using spell check and the correct punctuation, grammar and paragraphs.

As you used to be a teacher you must have received a high enough level of education to compensate for your dyslexia. If I were is your position I would craft a well written introductory message, check it 20 times for errors, then use copy and paste. I know people say copy and paste is bad form but there is nothing wrong with using it for the standard part of your message in which you would say the same thing to every person you message. Then just add a bit at the beginning that's tailored to the recipient.

If you feel the need you could also explain that you have dyslexia so the recipient will take that into consideration.

Of course if you don't want to do all that you could try messaging people with terribly written profiles as they won't notice anyway

If you look at most people on here text speak is a big no no. It does show some one is lazy why not just use standard English when composing an email ?

i love ya to bits... but i am going to disagree with you a bit here...

people use all sorts of things to decide on whether to meet someone

be that age....

or size.....

or height...

or sexuality....

or a million and one other things.....

it is always going to be a "perception thing"...

for example... ooooh... big black dude... scary!!!!

we all make judgement calls, whether you like it or not, in meeting people, and whom we meet...

if spelling is one of those things... so be it... just like it can be seeing a picture would... it can be a first impression thing for a lot of people....

Text speak and spelling are two different things. Text speak is like modern shorthand developed originally when phones had small screens and very limited space.

Nothing to do with education it's simply a lazy way of writing

I'm not hugely bothered by spelling on here - BUT how you write is an indicator of the kind of person you are, just the same as how you speak and inevitably some judgement is made.

Text speak nearly always appears dumb and so do lots of other phrases - wot, i, a instead of an, incomplete sentences etc. all suggest to me if I'm likely to have an enjoyable conversation with somebody. Likewise for those that think my kind of thinking is stuck-up they're not likely to get on with me.

Dyslexia is different in that you can usually spot when somebody has something interesting to say but difficulty writing it, rather then those who hide behind their self diagnosis of it and those that can't be arsed.

Just this weekend, a friend and I had a surreal conversation about just this (and the difference, if any between farther and further) twixt bondage, a good hard fuck and watersports in a wet room [God I LOVE Fab for these moments]...

Anyway, the upshot of it was that, for us at least, it was one of the factors in deciding if we were likely to be compatible. Not necessarily the clincher, but would certainly add weight to one or other side of the scale.

For me, the killer is my tablet. Am making the cardinal error of typing away on it now, so so will used my normal caveat of having big hands that hamper progress on a small (7") screen and hope that this plants the seed of curiosity in ghe mind od lady readers that my endowment is of ecquine proportions.

Ok, this crops up time and time again and I always refrain from sticking my oar in because it's such a contentious issue but here's the thing for me; I really struggled to understand the OP's original post because it doesn't follow the 'rules' of the written word.

I read and write English the way I was taught and have a basic understanding of it with the common spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes that quite a few of us do.

When reading something that follows the rules, it flows and I can understand it without conscious thought but in all other cases, I have to slow down and try to work out what is being said. When it starts to hurt or I can't make sense of it, it gets deleted or unread.

Hey OP...I often post on spelling threads about how totally anal I am regarding spelling and grammar (still in therapy after making a typo on a Fuck, Kiss, Avoid thread in 2011). I have to say I struggled to understand your OP, but had no problems reading this response. I would never pull someone over the content of a message, and as others have said, if I can understand the content then no problem (or np in txt spk)...if I have to read something 3 or 4 times to get the gist of it (which I do with txt spk) then I'm afraid I'm less likely to bother and will probably just send a thanks but no thanks. In summary, typos and grammatical errors make me wince, but that's my problem and doesn't stop me responding...txt spk and incomprehensible messages will be binned most of the time. Happy swinging

1. "please bare with me" (wait) - they are actually asking you to get naked!

(should be "bear with")

2. "I am waiting to here from them" - "hear" please!

3. "There going to be late" - "They are" = They're

4. "If you except my suggestion" They mean "Accept"

5. "That is not aloud" - should be "allowed".

6. "We like to be discrete" They say separate they mean discreet.

I am sure others know more. It is not dyslexia as those with that affliction often work harder on spelling and grammar than most others.

Can I ask, would spell checkers pick up all your mistakes? Sometimes it must present you with words you are uncertain of. Homophones for example ..?

I have dyslexia (fully not self diagnosed) and it's a common misconception that it makes you a have bad spelling, if you work hard and use the tools available it shouldn't even be that noticeable to people. Especially when writing on a computer screen, if it was with a pen & paper the that's a whole different matter. However due to dyslexia I find text speak difficult as it breaks the rules I have worked so hard to understand, therefore profiles and messages riddled with it I avoid.

I'm very guilty to making spelling, typos and autocorrect errors (the perils of the iPhone/iPad) but I do feel it is only polite to put the effort in to try and adhere to the rules of spelling & grammar wherever possible.

OP I found your original post hard going to fully follow, therefore if I got a message off you written in the same way, you would more the likely get a "thanks but no thanks" of me, as other posters have said it would have a bearing on how well I think we would get on, even if that appears shallow on my part.

I wish you good luck on here, but would recommend using the tools available to you in the modern world to help you with your condition.

I am mildly dyslexic and agree that is the case and as a consequence I make a point of ensuring I check the words. Over the years the reinforcing of the correct spelling has helped me make less mistakes.

Should I actually add to this?

I started a thread about a written conversation I had with a guy: messages went back and forth and then something made me question him as to why he hadn't read my profile. He blamed dyslexia and placed a

at the end of the sentence. Now due to his profile and content of messages I took this remark as being flippant NOT factual. It actually antagonised me on behalf of dyslexics.

Unfortunately several members here slated me because they ASSUMED I was disrespecting those sufferers in the thread. One could not not understand why anyone would lie about being dyslexic... well why does anyone lie about anything?

In the last thread about spelling and meeting, I did state that I hold a literary factor as a preference. Unfortunately someone took that as an attack and related it to being as bad as racism. Eventually he understood when I pointed out that sexually, a colour preference is not racist; likewise preferences for age, gender, and the ability to articulate well are not isms but permissible PREFERENCES.

However I will state it is a FACTOR and not the be all and end all! If someone is dyslexic (self or medical diagnosis) or even a bad speller, they can still make an effort with their writings. The use of punctuation is really important in making sense of a mass of words. If one says what they want aloud, they will naturally pause, in the written form this equates to a comma ",". If someone says something aloud and they stop, then this equates to a full stop ".". Another poster has already mentioned paragraphs. Break up the mass of words in bite size chunks and this helps the reader greatly.

Whilst I can sympathise with those who may struggle with dyslexia, the tools available; such as spell checkers should, perhaps be embraced by those who may struggle. I appreciate it may not filter out confusion over "there, they're and their" it might make it more legible.

Is it not possible to say out loud words, comma hesitations and full stops? As has been suggested already; if some of the endless sentences I so often see, were attempted as speech, one would hyperventilate.

My spelling has suffered by reverse osmosis, due to the amount of online content (including so called professional website copy writing) and I question a lot more of my own spellings than I ever used to.

Again I sympathise with those who are genuinely dyslexic, yet it seems from other insinuations here, I'm not alone in suspecting it is often just a convenient excuse for lazy writing.

One word responses that exhibit horrible spelling are a turn off for me. I have ceased contact with a good looking woman on here for exactly the reasons just listed.

You can believe it or not, that's cool. I hold others to the same collective standard that i hold myself.

Everybody has different skill sets though,

My view is in a professional environment I expect good attention to detail and spelling

In a non professional message then I really don't care as long as it legible and easy to read

Long messages/profiles without any punctuation though are a pain and doubtful I would invest the time to decipher them

Yes it does effect how I view people.

Just like taking pictures in an untidy house or with asda plastic shopping bags half full of rubbish in the background used as bins (yes really saw that on a couples profile today as they had sex in their untidy kitchen!!)

Text speak and bad spelling these days is inexcusable when using a computer/hand held device/phone, when messaging people.

Turn on your spell check etc!!

pretty much the same as most others.

as long as you dont type like a 13 year old talking with his mates then a bit of poor spelling wont bring the world crashing down.

however, having a HUGE block of writing to try and work through makes it daunting to say the least, so, even if unwarranted, try to split things up into wee paragraphs.

when people bang on about dictionary's and online spell checks all well and good but to use a dictionary you kinda need to be able to spell as sometimes it kicks out a few diff verations and like there did not have a clue !!! lol I suppose each to there own if people are gonna judge ya on spelling then they would not be right people to connect with in first place ?

Spell checks can be a pain in the ass for that - especially autocorrect. But dictionaries are pretty much designed to help you pick the correct variation if you read them.

as im ( m half ) very dyslectic writing a simple msg takes time and effort if you have to check and check again and then for it to be ignored is frustrating to say the least! but then only other dyslectic's would understand count your self so lucky if your not cursed with the affliction!!!

Exactly this...typos are excusable, appalling spelling, grammar and punctuation are not in my opinion!

Dyslexia is often used as a convenient excuse, and I know this from personal experience - my sister-in-law insisted my nephew was dyslexic and repeatedly took him for tests; it was proven he was nothing of the sort, simply lazy and a bit thick!

Dyslexia and intelligence are not related,

I have a family member who was diagnoised as being dyslexic 20 years ago, he gained a 1st and then a Phd and taught 1st year medical students at a local university.

Some of the great people from our history had the same problem and their contribution is still remembered today.

Just because they have the problem it does not give anyone else the right to treat them as a lesser person or in a disrespectful or condascending manner.

no, but it goes to prove that spelling and intellect dont go hand in hand, so if you are not meeting people on the basis of their spelling, you may well be missing out on people that have a gift with the spoken word.

So the answer to your question is, as far as we are concerned 'yes' crap spelling, poor composition etc. is at best 'impolite' where 'being polite' means being helpful and considerate of others.

If we receive a message that is too difficult to read then we put in the same amount of effort to reading it as the composer put in to writing it... none
