I'm just watching a news item about the body scans being brought in for 'safety.'

The scan is a full body one. It can see through your clothes.

I thought I might not be able to resist giving a wiggle when mine was being done but from the looks of things you have to stand still with your arms high. Not much fun as a pose that is it?

What I want you all to tell me is ..... Have these been brought in regardless of public feeling?

2. Maybe a jaded airport official couldn't be arsed about my x ray but what if Beyonce comes via Manc. or Katie Price..... Prince someone or other? Surely there's money to be made there or at least a laugh if Ann Widdecombe goes through.

3. How will this protect us ?

4. Does it infringe your rights and dignity?

5. Are any of you arsed either way ?

I understand that the Equalities & Human Rights Commission are challenging their legality based on the criteria for selecting people to be scanned saying that the policies could be used to discriminate.

They've also been challenged under privacy laws and an individual's right to privacy.

It is also my understanding that in order for the trials to go ahead the under 18's had to be excluded from the scanning process as they could breach child protection laws which ban the creation of indecent images of children....

So, regardless of whether I agree with them or not, they do seem to be a waste of time and money. If they are introduced at all our airports and sea ports, any determined bombers/smugglers will not take long to find a way to bypass them.

I think this is a gross infringement one our right to privacy. Also, how will it affect those people who are body-conscious and have trouble getting undressed in front of their partner?

I've never been a great fan of flying anyway so if these machines are introduced I shall be holidaying in the UK in the future.

Not sure about human rights, but if i had the choice, I’d rather go through a body scanning machine, than be pulled in and have a full body search done by customs officials like is done at present.

I believe that if a terrorist gets on the plane with a bomb on board, that would be a gross imfringment of my human rights if he detonated the bomb and brought the plane down.

It is through fear that these machines are being implemented. Aircraft are no less safer than in the 1970s when hijacking was at its most prolific, if anything aircraft are much more reliable and safer than then.

My pessimism arises because of the case involved that prompted the installation of these machines. A known al-queda sympathiser, who had been informed upon to the security services BY HIS OWN FATHER, and was on the no-fly list, was still permitted to make his way through an airport and board a plane.

Am I the only one who smells a rat here?

This government has shown time and again that it has no regard for personal liberties in its relentless pursuit to control every aspect of life in this country. It is like a dog with a bone when it comes to information it considers hidden to its prying eyes by the British public - it has to know everything and Brown & Co must feel like Gestapo officers without anyone to interrogate if we try and prevent them from snooping on our lives. I am content to trust the security measures of airline companies/airport operators, who know their business inside out, rather than a prying, sneaky government that has lied to us about many many things over the past dozen years or so.

I have mixed views.

No one has a human right to fly on a plane – if you don’t like it don’t fly.

Some people’s jobs rely on them flying.

Fuck it they usually earn enough money to cope with a scanner…. For fuck sake most probably went to private school and enjoyed a lot worse than someone seeing the contours of their body.

People not worry so much about privacy when it’s a doctor who needs to see them butt naked to save their life.

It’s not and “if” someone tries to blow up a plane… they have already tried so the threat is real… surely it’s right to protect the public by making it as hard as possible for bombers to take stuff onto planes.

What about the privacy of transgender people?

Just a few of my conflicting thoughts.

If you are that much of an extremist and want to get liquids on a plan you could have a colostomy bag or catheter fitted.

i think to be honest the use of body scanning is infringing our human rights but if it saves myself, my family, and other people from being blown up and killed good luck to it...they can infringe on my human rights as much as they wish..

we are all subjected to a type of body search when we go thru a scanner if it goes ping, the trouble is a quick pat down sometimes doesnt reveal the problem..so if it needs a body scanner to save lives then so beit...but pls b4 u jump on me pls note i dont agree with it but if this is what we have to have in order to save lives im all for it..xxx stella

Think people are being quite commical about it all tbh.. Saw them on the news and unlike what people are saying the immage wasnt a "OMG is that what you look like naked"

It was like a normal x-ray, it was all kida grey/blue and was just about strong enough to see what is in your pockets as white blobs..

Turn up the strength and it would just look like the one on the movie Total Recall

Read today a handful of Islamic clerics have issued a fatwa about the scanners as their use breaks some laws about nobody being being naked by anyone else. So the use of scanners is likely to be challenged in court and I'd be putting my money on the challenge being successful, tbh.

it is great to see some people flying off the handle here....

there are a couple of things that can be done to allay a lot of fears here...

with regards to people going thru them... they only produce a ghostly outline of a person.... not going to be able to see if you have shaved or not... may be able to see metal.. but if you are going thru the metal detector at the airport it is going to beep up anyway....

i really don't see what the big fuss is... anything that makes travel safer has got to be a good thing....

okay... how about we have people of the same sex operating the machines... men check men, women check women.... simple as

On a slightly serious note…. I can imagine some bored airport staff abusing the use of scanners and playing something like the “chicks with dicks” game … seeing how may willies on women they can find.

To them it may be a laugh…. to a minority it could be most distressing.

I guess the fear of the system being abused is my niggling concern.

it's a clear and present danger for all that travel by airplane and we all deserve the right to travel safely no matter where we might be going and by what means, it's a fundamental human right to be safe and travel freely

I've used the phrase myself about another issue - might have been identity cards.

But when you stop to think... if it's a good reason to use to agree with something ... what happenes when the authorities turn it back at us when it's something we don't agree with?

i dont agree with id cards as its more money to tell them what they know its on my passport and driving licence!

I was in London on the day of the transport bombings.. in fact I dropped a friend (meet) off at the tube station (two stops away from one of the incidents) about ten minutes before it started.

I really do appreciate the “if it stops terrorist bombing planes”.

I just find the broad argument of “If you’ve nothing to hide” a little too broad.

IF that philosophy is applied generally and anything and everything is ‘legally’ open to monitoring there are possible consequences for even the most fearless.

Example: God forbid someone from a site like this was raped by a complete stranger and the defence for the accused had access to all of their online communications and activities… oh the picture they would paint with that.

The problem is, like anything brought in to fight terrorism. Its always a kneejerk reaction to a perceived threat.

In other words, Government being overly officious in the name of anti-terrorism, instead of doing the job correctly in the first place. The scanners will not protect against the latest type of two part liquid/gel bomb. One part inserted surgically into a body, the second part carried say in a syringe disguised as insulin for diabetics.

In reality its just another piece of oppressive legislation. Don't get me wrong, if it actually worked and allowed even quicker passage through what is ridiculous security regimes, then I'm all for it.

We travel in and out of spain on average once every 6 weeks, the flight takes 2hours 15 minutes. Queuing at the airport takes just as long or longer, where is the sense in that?

Hate to burst anyones bubble.....

They already do all of the above.

Its automated, three computers based in London, Birmingham and One in Scotland, not sure where, wasnt paying attention at that point.

They scan the communications for "key" words, and codes. They get around the Law on phone taps etc, because its not aimed at any one person,and its not continuous or manned.

This is why terror cells tend to give themselves away, modern communication methods are too easy to intercept.

I, for one, dont mind, if it makes it safer.

However, I do believe we have to draw a line somewhere, 1984 and all that.

As to the airport scanners, I guess its something we have to put up with in order to have peace of mind..... until a bomber hides the bomb components in body cavities, then where do we go?

It may not be politcally correct and may be construed as racist by some. However I agree with all you say.

At this moment in timeit is only muslim extremists blowing planes out of the sky, so, lets go the profiling direction and insist on all muslims or people travelling to/from those countries to be put through extra security, the rest of us can travel safely. Once Brit.s Italians, Yanks or others start blowing things up, add em to the list, until then, let us all travel with no hindrance.

I'm ex military, in the 70's and 80's all traveling to and from Irland (north and south) were screened by special branch and we did not complain about that, was it because we were the main targets.

I also carried an ID card, it did me no harm in fact it was a boon! Bring on the genetic data base for all, then anyone who commits an offence will know that the knock on the door is coming.

I'm all for human rights and human freedomes but they must be within the law and the law must apply to all equally regardless of colour religion sexual preferences or any other minority grouping you wish to place yourself in as an excuse for your actions.

i think the airlines will see it as savin money replacin planes !!

passenger safety is paramount to them as well so i cant see them objecting and if it reassures people that it is safer to fly especially with decreasing passenger numbers then they likely go ahead with it.

at end of day we all have the choice when we off on our holidays where and how we will get there!!

Wine all you like they are coming, same with ID cards and other what some will call limitations on liberty. Nope I don’t really like some of them but if it makes flying safe then I am all for it.

We used to drive with no seat belts and people wined about having to wear them a few years back! Now we do it as a matter of course and would be foolish not to. I am a big pro scanner after thinking it over in the last couple of months.

I have spent the last 30yrs in the uniformed services. In that role I have seen first hand the results of terrorism both in the UK and abroad.

Those who wish to impose thier will and ideas on our DEmocracy will stop at nothing to achieve the aims!

They will use, women, children or what ever to kill and maim.

Stop wittering about civil liberties and all the other rubbish.

I'm still undecided but there are two contributions here that say nothing is discernable in the scan.

I watched it on the news several times this morning.

On one males outline I could see his love handles clearly.

It outlines the human shape perfectly

When he turned around the B.B.C had fuzzed out his cock. If it wasn't 'viewable' why did they do that?

We would be able to see cocks very nicely.

Im going to make a plastic fanny guard and patent it.

I'm against the scanners, not because of modesty, if they wanna see me naked all well and good, I'm not taking the blame for the nightmares and therapy they might need !!.

However I'm against the scanners because they are a waste of money, the worst case of plane related terrorism (9-11) was made possible using little more than stanley knifes.

If anyone thinks you cannot get a knife (or knife-like weapon) on board a plane if you are really determined then you would be wrong. Prison guards find knifes etc all the time, made from home made things you might never guess to be a weapon until its too late.

I know the cabin doors are now locked, I know U.S. planes have an armed airmarshal. However when you are faced with a selection (maybe 20) extremist fundamentalists armed with Gillette razor blades melted into toothbrushes having already slit the throat of a few stewardesses/stewards/passengers etc.

Who can really tell what anyone would do when faced with something like that.

Dont fix the symptoms of the problem, fix the problem.

OK, I know thats easier to say than do, but in the long term its surely the only option.

don,t see wat the problem is,,betta safe than sorry,,if u don,t want to be screened ur within ur rites to refuse ,just means u,ll be taken to 1 side & searched/ checked in the old way,,just delay ur check in,

In other words if you don't want to be body scanned then don't fly, spend your holidays in the UK.

And before we try to make political arguments on this all three of the main political parties in the UK would bring in body scanners at airports if and when in power.

So unless you intend to start your own political party and gain an overall majority in Parliament, then you will have to put up with it for the safety of the majority who choose to fly without fuss.

I am sure that personal feelings regarding civil liberties would be thrown out of the window if one of your own immediate family was killed in an explosion on a plane because airport security was lax.....

It is the statements like this throughout the thread I find most appalling. To be able to live your life as you wish with freedom of movement, you have to conform to how a Government wants you to??

Carry it forward with just one instance. The Government don't want lots of you to smoke do they? They have brought in lots of rules to stop you smoking. Now how many of you support the use of body scanners because........ and yet do NOT support the smoking ban because it impinges your civil liberties?

I could quote many more, but the truth is, its more a case of, it don't affect me directly so I am not bothered.

my civil liberties are breached every soddin day but tough i deal with it!!

i cant smoke here or there

i need to wear i seatbelt which i hate

i cant shoot my ex partner blah blah!!

one mans freedom is another mans prison!

hell i dont care if they place scanners in railways or other public places as long as its minimising my risk of being blown up il deal with it the same as with every other inconvience

thats my opinion!! xx

Somewhere along the way the government has lost sight of the fact that it exists to serve the people. The people do not exist to give meaning to the government. It is their job to do our bidding, not treat us a product or cattle that can be manipulated and pulled this way or that at whatever convenience the government decides is appropriate.

Many societies have been under the rule of thumb by an unlistening government in the past and there is a tipping point. A point in time where the people say collectively, "Enough is enough!," and that's when this government, and any successive government who doesn't serve the people, will get the very rude wake up call that is long overdue.

Up the revolution!! Down with the Aristos!!! hehehe

Those who wish to bomb etc will find a way round it.

criminals do it every day.

People bring out new things every day to try and protect , homes, cars and credit card scams.

I have no problem with the hold ups because of security at airports But i for one draw the line at body scanners.

what will happen with the muslim women ?

They will not allow this to happen and i bet their civil liberties are respected. so should everyones

I have spent the last 30yrs in the uniformed services. In that role I have seen first hand the results of terrorism both in the UK and abroad.

Those who wish to impose thier will and ideas on our DEmocracy will stop at nothing to achieve the aims!

As long as i get to my destination and have a cracking holiday i am not bothered one iota.

If it means an extra 2 mins of my life getting scanned in which i have nothing to hide then whats the problems.

What is up with some people nowadays!!

How long before the Compensation Culture Army sues for whatever they want to call it as it abused their rights getting bloody scanned.

having seen a "body scanner" in action all it actually does is show the outline of the human body below any clothing, this enables the operator to see if anything is strapped to the person.

as a lorry driver who has traveled outside the UK on many trips with a lorry, these are scanned frequently along with the driver by a scanner to detect hidden human cargo,why they need to scan a driver as well as the lorry has always amazed me.

But on the subject of the body scanner's at ports and airports i'll except them because it may well make travel safer, i'm old enough to remember that dreadful day when the lockerbie 747 was bought down by a bomber or bombers with the total loss of souls aboard and many more on the ground

and recently the 911 disaster's where plane's were used as flying bomb's to take out targets in the USA, what was the total loss of life that day ????? if these scanner's save just one life they have done their job

In much the same way as the border agency tell you that you need a valid passport or you leave the airport through the same entrance that you arrived

If they're really determined to blow up a plane then they'll try to do it regardless of our safeguards - I can even imagine bombs etc being planted on children as they will be exempt from the body scanner- I think they're a waste of time and money although I obviously agree with very tight security at airports etc - why not use the security that has been used for years in the middle east? The guys doing the checks have to fly on the plane - that makes them VERY thorough! Z
