As an ex smoker i don't mind smokers at all and personally i miss smoking. If the ban on smoking never came into force i am sure i would still be smoking as its not the same not smoking whilst having a pint. And also , maybe its just me but i thought the smell and a smoky pub was part of the atmosphere, it feels as if somethings missing now.

I understand its a difficult habit to quit and also its the individuals own right to do as they please, not succumb to pressure from the anti smoking nazis.

The smoke works well to absorb the smell of musky piss and body odour that you tend to smell from non-smokers

Someone once told me all non-smokers are uptight stress freaks who have nothing better to do in their life than complain about smokers, because now pubs don’t smell of smoke other people can smell their B.O. and no one will socialise with them… but I think it’s a myth.

I heard the biggest problem with smokers is they believe the smell hides their smell of BO etc, and so believe by smoking they don't need to wash, hence the smell becoming worse that it need be.

Slow suicide has never been something I have considered, but its a personal choice. The evidence is there, if you choose to ignore it thats your choice.

Smokers choose to smoke, I choose not to, but that also means if I go into a pub or club I should not have to inhale smoke.

Sure, you could say dont go into these places, but thats a bit childish isnt it? The law doesnt say to you, because you smoke you aren't allowed to go to pubs or clubs, it just says dont smoke inside. Do you really want to force those who choose not to smoke to inhale?

"Ah, but, fatties don't force food down your throats. "

True, they don't, but they're a strain on an already stretched NHS, which I might add, they don't contribute to like smokers do.

I try not to get involved with the anti smoking brigade, all I'll say is give them what they want, once the start having to pay higher taxes to replace those previously paid by smokers, they'll soon regret shouting from the rooftops!

My healthcare?

You are labouring under the false understanding perpetuated by the smoking lobby that all the tax you pay goes into the NHS and outweighs the cost of caring for all the smoking related diseases.

Not true.

If that really was the case, do you really think that the Govt would spend millions encouraging people to give up?

Doesnt really add up, does it?

Give smokers what they want.

They pay over £11 billion in taxes per year.

What about all those idiots that have unprotected sex......... get pregnant (and think of the amount of money shiped out in benefits), get an STI or worse...... get HIV.....

Surely they are a bigger drain on the NHS than the smokers and I'm dam sure they ain't even paying VAT on condoms.

I have no problem with either, fatties or smokers, I can just argue any point, and do.

Actually (if I can manage to take this seriously for one moment) stats on how much smokers cost the NHS are severely flawed and misleading, they will include people purely because they smoke rather than after proving the illness was truly caused by smoking.

I’d type more detail but I need to get smoking in case you go out for a drink this week.

About £1,000 each a year?

I'd happily pay that in extra tax if it meant no-one had to die of smoking related diseases.

But then, it would actually only cost me about £330 a year, bearing in mind the amount of tax payers, and that is most definately a price worth paying.

Then factor in the increase in taxes paid in from all those who woud actually not be dead, and the savings in NHS costs, and as a rough guess that brings it down to about £160 a year I would have to pay.... cheap when you consider the emotional costs of someone watching a loved one die earlier than neccesary of a smoking related disease.

But, as I have said in earlier posts on this thread, its a personal choice, just so long as I dont have to inhale that crap I am happy.

Well I don't smoke but went to a wedding not long ago and stood outside most of the night with all the smokers as I was the only one sat at our table when they all went out for a smoke !

The people were very generous though when they saw I didn't have a ciggy so kept offering me some, Mr R had almost a packet of cigs to smoke by the end of the night"

Funny ya should say that lol cause when the smoking ban was introduced Les had been given up for a year

Then she started sitting in the smoking shelter with us all cause there was never anyone in the bloody pub

And hey presto she was back on 15 a day

How many bloody times has that happened across the country lol

The govt released figures the other day that stated a one percent rise in tobacco sales since the ban

The friggin idiots have killed the pubs and encouraged smoking and for their next trick lol

(and before anyone says clean air yes i agree that smokers should be segregated from those that dont smoke but for fucks sake DONT chuck us out like dogs give us a feckin room ) xx

But, as I have said in earlier posts on this thread, its a personal choice, just so long as I dont have to inhale that crap I am happy.

So the smokers that you will meet either don't exist or don't actually smoke then?

Utter hypocrisy.

If you don't like smokers....... don't socialise or meet with them."

You seem to think we rank smokers as something akin to lepers, to be avoided at all costs in case we get "infected".

We, however tend to have a more adult view of the world. When we meet socially in pubs, clubs etc, those that smoke do so in designated areas. If we are engaged in conversation with someone, we tend to go with them. If we meet in someone elses home, we accept that they are free to smoke, but very many have asked if we mind, and many smoke outside, which is very much appreciated, but again, we might end up out there with them.

What I did object to, is going into a pub etc, and being met with a smog of fag smoke, and having no choice about it, unless it was to not go to the pub. That to me was not acceptable.

Yet you state below.......

"If we meet in someone elses home, we accept that they are free to smoke"

so if they do light up, I take it you leave before you play then?

", but very many have asked if we mind, and many smoke outside, which is very much appreciated,"

Very considerate of them and a question we ask ourselves to non smokers if they visit our home

"but again, we might end up out there with them"

Again, we have a choice.

Do you live your life by a set of unwavering, set in stone, absolute rules, or do you take each day, each personal interaction, on its own merits, evaluating each with its pros and cons, allowing some "give and take" in each situation?

"Berating".... no, just having an opinion, which happens to be different with yours, which seems to be against the rules.

"About £1,000 each a year?

I'd happily pay that in extra tax if it meant no-one had to die of smoking related diseases.

But then, it would actually only cost me about £330 a year, bearing in mind the amount of tax payers, and that is most definately a price worth paying.

Then factor in the increase in taxes paid in from all those who woud actually not be dead, and the savings in NHS costs, and as a rough guess that brings it down to about £160 a year I would have to pay.... cheap when you consider the emotional costs of someone watching a loved one die earlier than neccesary of a smoking related disease.

."

Can you quantify those figures. Where do you draw the reductions from? Is this imformation freely available and if so, where can it be viewed?

I think it was taken from someone asking where ex amount of cash would come from if smokers stopped, I think they worked out from that post what you see and have quoted here.

I think this because, they don't seem to state their findings as such, but question and mention it's a rough guess.

Well, depends where you look, but basically they say about a third of adults smoke (30 million adults, one third is 10 million), then 11 billion in taxes divided by 10 mil equals about £1000 each in taxes per smoker per year.

This divided between 30 million adults is £330 each. The rest is explained in the post. Hope that clears it up.

"Ah, but, fatties don't force food down your throats.

About £1,000 each a year?

I'd happily pay that in extra tax if it meant no-one had to die of smoking related diseases.

So tell me oh mighty one, where does the country come down so hard on people bringing cigerettes back from other countries. Because there loosing out on the tax we pay thats why. So fair enough we all give up smoking and you can then pay the extra taxes. By the way since the smoking ban has come in non smokers are not very high at risk of inhaling smoke so surely those that die from smoke related illness are those that smoke and im sure we are all intelligent enough to know that. Also and this is very true the people in my life ive known that have died of cancer not one smoked, maybe in there early years but certainly not for at least 20 years before they died. Now excuse me while i find my fags

And neither does this: your profile says your willing to meet smokers, if your so “anti” bit hypocritical

So does the OP's profile say "will meet smokers"

Its perfectly ok to alter your choices as you go along, but it does smack of desperation and the "any holes a goal" theory when ya moaning like crap about smokers and their smell."

The OP (Adam) is not desperate honey, hes a wind-up merchant I (Eve) smoke and we meet smokers all the time we actually dont have a problem with smokers but we do have a problem with people that jump to their own conclusions He only asked that he heard that some people think smokers smell lol (tounge in cheek) I object to the any holes a goal remark, We are really rather select in our meets !!

I assumed the OP was having a chuckle with this thread rather than having a go for real. "

"We could argue this forever, I am far from being the smartest here, but I could rip every serious post on the subject here so far to bits, both sides of the discussion.

Does it really matter?

What a crock of shite a lot of this is.

We all have different opinions on pretty much every subject.

Get over it.

That's the problem, people don't.

I love a good debate, I will debate with anyone, think I get that from my granddad, lol.

The problem lies that people get too passionate about things, instead of thrashing out ideas, they take things personal and even get personal.

That's not my thing, I like to take the pee, I like a serious debate, but jeez, have you seen some of the tetchy comments here.

Come on people, we are all adults, get a grip, and this coming from me, now aren't you ashamed?.

small print, little cheesy green smilies there to sow I'm trying to lighten the mood.

Nope,

Smokers get vehemently passionate

Non smokers quote undeniable facts which generates apoplexy in smokers
