Burning Issues

Shortly after calling David Beckham thick in another post, I stood up and badly burned my leg on a portable gas fire which I got too close to as I stood up from the computer desk. How very thick of me - divine retribution I guess.

I had to go to A&E to have it dressed safely and am sporting a wonderful brand of five bars down the outside of my right calf.

This means I won't meet anyone new as it looks dire. It will look dire for months yet I have a talking point surgery scar across my stomach from a broken pelvis repair when I was hit by a d*unken driver that really doesn't bother me and hasn't stopped me from parading naked in the boudoir. Yet my leg burn will make me self conscious just wearing a skirt to the supermarket if it doesnt fade well.

Why do we angst over some body issues and not others? Was the war wound of a car accident earned and the burn mere stupidity so gives me a sense of shame to have it? So strange a way to think...

Perhaps the leg burns are more easily noticed then the stomach scar?

If some one sees your stomach scar it means they have been allowed to become more intimate and personal before they see that, whereas anyone will see your burns,ie supermarket etc?

Whatever happens I wish you well and a speedy recover, accidents happen, whether a car or a heater xxxx

Hmmm, very interesting question, and I think you may well have partially answered your own question, its to do with how you think of it, not how others think of it.

I for one have no interest in the photoshopped, airbrushed, hollywood perfection that never really exists. All the blemishes, knocks, bumps etc are part of the person, it makes them who they are, life experience. If the people who you were concerned about were worried about a scar, mark, blemish etc. surely they are too shallow for you to care about their opinion anyway?

I'd much rather meet someone whose life experience has been many and varied, the conversations and shared experiences are much more likely to be similar to my own and as such any conversations etc can be interesting.

The thought of trying to make small talk with an airhead "barbie" type who thinks that the be all and end all of existance is physical appearance makes my skin crawl.

(I'm now mentally picturing the scene in Jaws when the 3 guys are aboard the boat and d*unkenly comparing scars and stories).

PS, I know both the pelvis and the burn were painful, I hope your feeling better now.

brecon

I had an accident as a young child, which left me with facial scars. At first, with all the scars visible and very pink, it affected me greatly, to the extent I would sub-conciously cover part of my face with my hand, and turn my face to one side away from people all the time.

However, the smaller scars faded away, and the others settled down and now I only have two, which, although noticable to me, aren't really commented on by others. The mental "baggage" still exists though, and if anyone ever seems to be looking closely at that area of my face, I tend to turn away without thinking.

little house on the praire

I was burnt badly in a fire 21 years ago and had horrendous scares everywher but my face. My face was saved when they where pulling my clothes of. I was so so conscious of the scars but by the grace of god they had all dissappeared within a year and you can only see the ones on my legs when its really cold. I hope yours dissappear quickly if you go to a shop that sells oils and stuff ask them what they recommend i cant remember if its lavender oil but one of the oils rubbed in gets rid of the scaring quite well. On the other side of the coin, a month after my bandages came of i went to a party and was sober cause i was conscious of myself and met my ex husband lol. so at the the time some good came out of it lol

I'm in complete agreement with Crumpet and Nom De Plums (I do love that name!)

Any guy who thought it an issue would not be a guy worth seeing.

Good luck best and wishes from me. XX

Thank you so much for your kind messages of goodwill - very much appreciated.

I was touched at the recounting of your own scarring stories - burns are so cruel but it seems your own attitude is the best healer. But as you say it leaves some issues that sometimes bubble up.

I have paraffin dressings on my leg at the moment but someone has suggested manuka honey when the area has healed. Ill see what it looks like when I go for treatment again today.

Thanks for your contribution on such a sensitive issue xxxxxx
