I’m not sure if this happened during my lifetime

But I think one of the most significant scientific events ever is probably the realisation that the earth is a doomed planet and that humanity must escape its confines to stand any chance of survival…

And on that cheerful note,,,, I'll be packing my case....and awaiting the motherships return to whisk me off back to my home planet…..

"What's been the most significant historical event in your lifetime"

Apart from my own birth, I nominate the 'Long March through the Institutions' (sic) of Britain by communists/fabians that began during the Unnecessary War (as Winston Churchill called the 'Second World War') but came to manifest in earnest to the naked eye c. 1976 resulting in the (now fully accomplished) total degradation of Britains institutions and society which having once been the envy of the world are now its laughing-stock.

Norwich

At 6 yo I watched the state funeral of Churchill on TV.

At 10 yo the Apollo moon landings.

At some point in the early sixties air raid sirens sounded in London in the middle of the night. Not frightening for me because I didn't know what was going on but very worrying for the adults.

In the late 70's and early 80's it was being involved in NI and the Falklands.

In the late 90's the death of Diana made me realise just how far the establishment would go to stop Mohamed Fayed getting a UK passport.

Since then I've realised that the government:

Usually deny most strongly that which is true.(see next point)

Do deal with terrorists (Martin McGuinness, Nelson Mandela et al)

Lie like a cheap timex watch about anything, however trivial.

Death of Diana: the mass hysteria that followed was alarming.

9/11: the full impact of such evil was (still is) frightening.

Barack Obama elected America's first black president: a black man in the White House. Affirmation for our children to not accept glass ceilings and believe you can be anything you want to be. I felt almost as proud of Barack as watching my children in their gowns collecting their degrees.

JFK's assassination - first time I saw my father cry. Not sure he would have made the world a better place, but he made us believe that he would, which was so good.

And then 1968- Robert K and MLKing....

All those riots

A bomb going off near Jaffa Gate (Jerusalem), seconds after my brother walked that way - took long hours before I knew he was safe.

Moon landing - stayed up and watched it live. Anwar Sadat laughing with Golda Meir - so much hope then. The Second Tower - realising it was real. And the development of the Internet - the sole reason we are here and can contact people we otherwise would never meet.

Good thread.

November 1989. Tim Berners Lee creates the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet. Thus the modern World Wide Web was born.

I know many people are saying many other historical events, and I almost went with 9/11.

But honestly, in my lifetime, I struggled to find one other event which has touched almost the entire facet of humanity and all corners of the earth than the birth of the WWW.
