Full marks to the guy in Leeds who was so pissed off receiving cold calls from companies for P.P.I etc that he got himself a premium rate 0871 number .

Apparently it costs just £10 to set one up. Each call costs 10p and he gets 7p from that. In two years he has made £300.

He claims that he even asks them lots of questions in order to keep them hanging on and increase his revenue !!

Seemingly he has a seperate line for friends and family. He gives the premium line number out as his contact number to companies like the bank, electric and gas who then pass it on to cold callers. Cost him a tenner plus vat to set it up.

Just checked BTs website.

Didn't give details of 08 numbers but 09 numbers only cost £25 to set up.

Unfortunately you must register with PhonepayPlus and that costs £125

Premium rate numbers are effectively 'rented out' by a telephone provider and they then use exchange based call forwarding to forward the calls to a regular phone number. In the case of large companies that use them, the premium rate number will forward to a regular telephone number which is a gateway number to a call management system - typically with capacity to host several hundred incoming calls at one (or more).

Reminds me of a programme I watched a few months ago a bloke got fed up of being called over and over by the same marketing company. So started recording the calls and informed them over the phone and through writing what was going on and that he was going to charge them something like £10 a min. So every time they call him he states this and stays chatting as long as they like at the end of the month he bills them they don't reply he sends another recorded no reply goes to court wins

Random incoming calls on a landline from companies wishing to offer you their services are sometimes auto dialed. If you choose to pick up the receiver and hear a continuous tone then it means nobody is available to sell you their product
