I have two children with learning difficulties.. one very severe... she has been in mainstream school until the last 6 months.. she is now about to start 6th form at special school.

The kids in primary were amazing with her... However I wish I had opted for special school when it came to secondary as the gap between her social abilities and that of her peers became much more noticeable at secondary school... mostly after year 9.

Schools mostly have a good set up these days to help these children reach the best of their potential. NEVER be afraid to go in and discuss something. If he doesnt already have one.. Suggest a home day book... It gives you a good understanding of how his day has been... and means you can give notes to the teacher without having to wait before or after school...

My daughter was very happy at her infants school and was well liked and got on well.. she is academically very good.. hence I tried to keep her out of special school as I wanted her to sit exams,... Sadly that ended up not possible but she is going to college one day a week to do maths, english and a btec in catering.

Its scary for you... I know that.. but for him I bet he is excited..

I think regardless of our kids abilities we feel wretched leaving them. Fast forward a few years and you then wonder when (please God) they'll leave home!

If the teachers know his needs and he has friends, im sure he will be ok, and everyone is in the same boat

Big hugs for you though

I wish him good luck. I am sure he will love it - he will have all his mates to support him as well as staff. My eldest started high school last week and I was worried his mouth would get him into trouble but he settled straight in no problem as did my youngest when she started primary school

But then I get the feeling you are more worried about it than him - so do what you always do, hide it from him and have a little mummy cry the first day after he's gone and just remember, you aren't alone, lots of mums have the mummy cry when their kids start big school.

It's a big step for any child, moving up to secondary school. My friend is a one to one TA at a primary school for special needs. They work very closely with the secondary school when its time for any of their kids to move up. To be honest, I think your primary school would have had a word with you if they didn't think your lad would cope with the move. Their are quite a few people in the system who will want him to succeed and be happy in the new school, as well as you! I know you know him best, but they have faith in him like you do too! As mentioned, keep in close contact with the school, they should be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. X

Mega big step for you and it sounds like his M8s will be there for him. Have you spoken to the special needs coordinator at the school?

Also probably telling you want you already know but have you tried local branch of the NSA? There will be other mums and dads who've been there who will be able to give you invaluable first hand advice.

I'm sure all of us reading this out here in the ether are rooting for you big time.
