depression and sex

I was having a few beers with a friend who is also a psychologist at the weekend. We were debating quantity of sex and 'depression'.

One theory being if you are depressed or feeling down on yourself you will choose to have a wide and varied sexual diet. The endorphine rush making you feel better in the short term.

The other theory being the opposite. Free from the shackles of depression and guilt you would be more likely to let your body respondto its natural uurges and have a largennumber of partners.

There was a news report on this a while ago

They said studies showed that people who have a string of one night stands are more likely to end in depression then people in relationships

Pretty interesting I didn't think there was such a string link between sex and mental health

Undoubtedly there are people out there who use sex to make them feel good about themselves and feel wanted but I suspect that would be people in the vanilla lifestyle, as many people find in the swingers lifestyle sex isn't on tap and that could make someone feel unwanted and more depressed. Sex can be and often is a rush for us especially if it's spontaneous.

Mmmmm interesting...

I have done both, when I am happy and all is good it reflects in my personality and I have lots of happy sex with a few 'chosen ones'.

I have also been not so happy, but not really depressed, and have had mind blowing sex with a stranger, felt great at the time but the 'good feeling' soon faded and I felt crap for a while.

Thankfully I have now found the right balance and dont let things get me down.

A study found an association between depression in women and casual sex that was stronger than that found for men. Woman are more open about there sex needs now than years ago .It do worry me some have to get so d*unk to have a good time with no string sex . Sex is good for you but like a lot of things can become boring if not good and you don't click you feel nothing and then its don't make it special no matter how good at oral and stuff .

I would have assumed if you are depressed you wouldn't have much of a sexual appetite; moreso an over-powering lethargy towards sex...

...Unless your depression is due to a lack of sex!!

Yes maybe some but there a lot of different ways of looking at things. People under stress and depressed are turning not just to sex wi . Smoking , drinking ,Eating, impulse shopping.... whatever.. Does impulse shopping stress you out make you depressed, or do you shop because you are stressed? I do and end up getting crap at times . .. Some need a fix could be eating . I don't think casual sex can make you more than others if you're at a low in life . Its when you overdo things and can't live without them like drugs and drink and other things that's when things get bad .

I just think that Psychologists get things wrong so mant times. The number of people they have declared fit to return to society(after murder convictions) who have killed again gives me no confidence whatsoever in their ability to diagnose anyone correctly.

I can see a bit of truth in both arguments but there are too many variables to say it's one or the other. Each person is different.

One person that has low self-esteem may thrive on a site like this from all the attention.

Another person with the same self-esteem issues wouldn't dream of coming on a site like this cause they'd have to get naked, show themselves, mingle.etc

The same issue dealt with differently by 2 different people

Clinical depression is different to even deep sadness.

At different stages a person might be desperate for escapism, feeling self-destructive so more willing to take risks and go for excesses, feeling very isolated or may feel unable to function as normal. Even getting washed or eating can feel a mountain to climb.

So interesting to look at trends and yes intimacy with the right person can alleviate early symptoms of depression.
