Avoiding crying children

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

It seems that Scoot - the budget arm of Singapore Airways - is offering seats away from young children for an extra cost of £10.

Good idea?

Personally children don't tend to bother me on short haul flights. But I have had a few nightmare times on long haul. Not the children's fault - it's hard enough for an adult on a 14 hour flight.

But, as a lone traveller, I do like to travel in relative peace and quiet if I can.

My 5 year old nephew can shit his pants without breaking eye contact.

...it just looks like he's thinking really, really hard.

I've been saying this for years. With everything bein Extra on budget flights these days I'd be perfectly happy to pay £10 to not be within say, 5 rows of a toddler.

I dislike any age child anywhere near me when im out

UNLESS ...... I knew it was a family type thing before I went.

I'd pay thousands to not have them on my flight at all ...... or in my restaurant or swimming pool.

I do feel sad for them though ...... it's going to look hilarious with all the kids stuck in one area of the plane with their parents.

If a kid kicks off you can hear them if you are on another continent so essentially it's not worth the tenner....

Can't we pay twenty to cut their vocal chords ?

The pressurised cabins can really hurt young children's ears - especially during take off and landing. I understand why they cry - but on long haul flights I like to be able to sleep a little and sometimes that is just not possible.

I actually paid for business class on my last visit to Australia. Well worth it to travel without the fuss of a lot of young children. And I couldn't hear a thing.

How long is a plane compared to distance a childs crys can travel,

Don't use them so could be wrong but surely if you are in a tin can at the back you would still hear a distressed child at the front,

The trigger factor for me is the parenting. If a child is crying but the parent is genuinely doing what they can then I can sympathise. When the patents is ignoring, pushing the child on an older sibling or just being thoughtless it gets to me.

If we start to pay to avoid kids then do we start to pay to avoid d*unks, loud screeching laughs, loud irritating head sets, etc

Not necessarily. Not in my experience. But then, on long haul, the cabins are pretty big and divided up. I was in business last time right at the front (well just behind first) and heard not a peep.

For me, on long haul, I would pay to avoid them. Kids cannot behave sat in constricted seats for 14 hours. They are going to be noisy. Young babies will cry often quite a lot simply because it must be very uncomfortable for them.

If I could pay a little extra to be sat further away then I would. I've not seen too many loud d*unks on long haul - in fact, cannot remember seeing any ever. Mostly people are interested in trying to get through the hours as peacefully as they can.

Short haul is very different in my experience.

I can find it amusing watching the kids on flights with the parents getting harassed or arsey with them. Best was last time I went to Barcelona and the woman in front with a rather cheeky 5/6 year old who clearly didn't want to be bothered by him and smacked him a couple of times because he just wanted some attention and for her not to sleep. She soon stopped when I leant forward and whispered that actually interacting with him instead of smacking him might be a more preferable option especially with 3 childcare social workers sat behind her!!

I find, on long haul, parents seem to be more seasoned travellers and usually bring a lot of things for the children to do. The airlines often also provide things and there is plenty for them to watch or play on the in-flight entertainment. But, no matter how hard a parent may try, it is really hard to entertain very young children for 14 hours or so. Children will become fractious and troublesome.

Paying more to be placed nearer the front with children nearer the back is some kind of solution to those travelling without children.

Its a great idea! People who don't like children can avoid them at a cost and subsidise those that will sit near them a win win all round as the parents don't get the tisks from annoyed people around.

Emirates Business is phenomenal. Literally door to door service. It does cost - but once you have paid you pay nothing else at all, not even in the business lounges.

Good idea, but where do we draw the line ? We live in a society where we think we can avoid everything and everyone that irritates us instead of compromising.

What next...sit away from badly dressed people, etc etc though I do understand its hard to have noisy kids

Sit in front of a restless child for 12 hours + and see how you feel then. One economy flight to Dubai was enough for me. Never again. If I have to save for two years to afford business that is how I travel long haul now.

I use Impulse as a body spray after the shower - Chanel 5 is my favourite perfume. I also wear Obsession, J'Adore, Poison and a few others which I rotate on a regular basis or use dependent on my mood.
