It's also the old English for crutch as used as an aid for walking and most commonly referred to as 'crutch' nowadays. Another example of how language is not fixed and static but forever evolving. Maybe people who whine about text-speak should take note. Do U C? "

I think the then/than thing is people commonly using the wrong one, for example 'my lolly is bigger then yours'.
