It's the polices new project to stop crime as they have wiped out all the peodophiles, child abusers, drug dealers, rapists, burglars, shop lifters, fraudsters, terrorists, online bullies........ Oh no they haven't have they, they just go for easy targets to make money like motorists football fans etc etc

the world is changing and online abuse is increasing.

People are taking to twitter, including footballers and are subject to significant abuse, some more than just banter.

To be honest I think it is just a reflection of how big the sport is. One player can have millions of followers on twitter and many sadly will hate him

What about rugby ? Cricket ? Etcetera

Since the hooliganism in the 80's and thatchers clamp down on "a British diseases" football fans have become an easy target

You only have to look at wembley

Rugby fans can drink in their seats

Football fans can't !

Are their plastic glasses much less dangerous??

Rugby fans can be trusted to drink, enjoy the banter with the opposition fans then meet them in the pub after the game and have more alcohol and a laugh. Football fans are different sadly. I no longer take my girls to football matches. Just watch the tv pictures. Kids are using foul language and abusing players as much as the adults.

I happily take them to rugby.

I realise that not all football fans are bad however they rid still a large element who give the others a bad name.

You can't target something that doesn't exist. If the abuse and moronic behavior ceases then so will targeting I imagine.

Stop playing the victim if you're not actually affected in any way.

If the Police wish to monitor illegal* posts on social media they should do so equally, regardless of the alleged perpetrators hobbies/interests. Simple as.

*Bearing in mind the guidance that the CPS gave out a short while ago re the likelihood of a successful conviction.

Sorry but how many riots do you see at major rugby or cricket events? hardly any because the fans know how to behave.

I go to the rugby regularly and have seen people removed from the ground for being too d*unk or using bad language because there are kids around.

I never understand why fans of a team feel the need to bring shame on their team by fighting or being abusive etc.

Rugby fans can be trusted to drink at games and not fill their drink containers with piss and throw it back into the crowd (worked at Wembley and yes this happens!!!)

no - i watch real rugby lol

i mainly watch club rugby and although attendances arent as high as football i can honestly say there arent too many hooray henry's at Sixways.

So are you saying that the behaviour of football thugs (i wont say fans because that will degrade the true fans) is excused because of their number?

The reason why you are reading about it is because they are successfully clamping down on paedos etc. If they weren't then there would be nothing to report.

And they can do more than one thing at once too. They can monitor sex offenders, paedophiles, AND football hooligans. All at the same time!

Season ticket holder at Sale Sharks, never seen more than 4 coppers directing vehicles at the ground.

Compare that to the lockdown of pubs etc when United or City are playing at home.

Last game of the season against Wasps, good game and the Wasps fans great company, nice to be able to mingle and drink with oppo fans and be treated like an adult, unlike at football grounds.

The history of moronic behaviour from (some) football fans is plain for all to see, which is why we have the measures we have.

Its not 'victimisation', its a measured response to past history.

You seem to expect the police to completely eradicate everything??? Do you seriously believe that is possible?? Of course it's bot. Look at the number of people in the country and the number of coppers. The police can't monitor every person in the country, society has its rile to play as well.

"So they are successfully targetting bullies online? I see. No suicides lately then? Glad they've sorted that and can spare the manpower to pick on footy fans. Who did the research for this? Oh Stonewall. What a shocker! Not. "

Oooh sarcasm!

Where did I say they'd stopped it? However you seem to be of the opinion that the Police only have the resources to monitor one set of problems, and football hooligans should not be it. My point was that the Police can monitor several sets of offenders, and that they can sort our bullies, paedos, AND hooligans with no limit on resources.

You then said that there were no results because you're reading about them in the press. Well that means there must be SOME results, else you wouldn't be reading about it.

One last thing - why are online bullies suddenly the responsibility of the Police? Where are the parents? The Police can only get involved after the death, as being a sod online is NOT illegal (yet!) And I suspect you would be one of the people posting on here saying what bastards the Police are when someone posts yet another moaning post about the erosion of our rights. They can't win.

In the case of the OP, if you are a football supporter and are unhappy about this new thing, then blame your fellow football supporters. Why should us non-football supporters be made to feel in danger every Saturday afternoon? What gives football supporters the right to cause havoc, mayhem, and damage to property and person just because a bunch of pampered and overpaid boys can't hit a ball into a net?

So moan about paedos, online bullies, and probably immigrants and traffic wardens if you like. Just remember that there are people out there doing much more to prevent situations that you are doing, and obviously without you knowing about it.

"You assume a lot about me wrydwoman and most of it is wrong. When was the last time you felt unsafe because football fans were insulting someone online?"

I haven't assumed anything about you. I have responded to your posts only, and given a reason why people might not like football hooligans.

Personally, I dislike the assumption that doing one thing prevents us from doing anything else. When people are caught breaking the law by speeding or using their mobile phone they always ask 'why aren't you out catching criminals?' Where does it say that there is only one man in the whole UK Police Force and that they are the only one monitoring online problems? You do understand there are 100s of people monitoring online paedophilia across many countries? That the resources are huge? That the search engines are just as responsible?

I have no problem with people moaning about specific instances. If you are arrested one day for walking down your street for nothing more than 'looking funny' then I will be as sympathetic as the next person. But if you break the law, either online or off, then expect the Police to pop around to have a word.

Just because it's not in the news doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Doesn't have to be to flight players does it? Maybe you are protesting too Mich because you are a perpetrator of this and are worried the cops are going to cone knocking.

People need to learn that they can't going around abusing people either in real life or online. It's never acceptable and even if the person taking the online abuse isn't affected it'd always possible that someone else reading it is. There are a lot of vulnerable minds out there not all of them children.

Doesn't say specifically in the OP. My interpretation of the OP is that they are moving their efforts from policing games to policing online bullies in relation to football related crime. Doesn't say that's the only firm if inline bullying they will be policing. Doesn't say they are going to ignore any other type if online abuse.

Has anyone considered that this may be sensationalist media hype ? In sure the odd few resources will look at it now and again, but the concept that an army of people are staring at computers waiting for some clown to shout something is unlikely.

Everyday fans jaunt eachother and the vast majority are never challenged unless its a hugely inflamatory situation.

If its racially motivated, homophobic or inciting violence why shouldn't it be dealt with ?

Somewhere near NE Derbyshire/S Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire border

The increase in arrests for football related incidents, drugs, peados etc is not necessarily do to them been targeted but More of the arrests been publicised.

There has Always been Offences of these types granted internet types only more in recent times.

There are more arrests due to more investigations and clampdowns. In ground arrests are now dramatically lower due banning orders, the police and clubs standing up to thugs

Yes, because that would be unfairly targeting a whole race of people. Whereas football hooligans have not exactly given us reason to think they have converted to good behaviour overnight.

Football thuggery transcends race, age, and class. What the Police are doing is targeting criminal behaviour, and if by doing that they have to monitor certain sites then I really don't know why you are getting your pants in a bunch about it. You say you want the Police to prevent online crime, but then say football thugs should be exempt from that. I don't get it.

Try coming to Scotland where we have an Offensive Behaviour at Football Act where you can be arrested and imprisoned for 5 years for singing a song at a football match but for singing the same song anywhere else is not an offence...

I think you have it good in England. I was down for the Scotland v England game. There were thousands of us in Trafalgar Square and the police were happy to let us have a laugh and enjoy our day. They were only there for public safety and to arrest a naked dude in the fountain!

Meanwhile supporters in Glasgow have been kettled for organising an "illegals march" where about 50 fans walked together from a pub to the ground!

I saw more police at a recent Scottish Premiership game against Ross County than I saw across the whole week in London. So disproportionate!

"Couldn't agree more.So your point is the same as mine. Don't stereotype.Have you tried my word substitution experiment yet? Tell me what you think please. "

No, your point was that you thought the Police were unfairly targeting football fans and should concentrate their resources on other sites to catch paedos and online bullies. My point was that they can do that AND keep an eye on online football thuggery. Your point has been all the way through the thread that you think the Police have limited resources and so have had to reduce their other duties. My point was that this has not been said anywhere, and that the Police can do ALL of these things.

I have no idea what you mean about your latter point. *shrugs*

"Erm where did I say I wanted football fans exempted from monitoring? I want everyone treated the same.99.9% of football never get involved in trouble."

You're right which is why this story will fade off the medias pages with very little consequence.

A few idiots I daresay will be prosecuted, but by and large the average fan won't notice anything different.

The stereotype of football fans has been created by the media, not the police.

It reads like you are making a strawman argument to deflect attention from your insistence that the police are taking resources away from one thing to concentrate on another, when no evidence has been shown by you that that is the case.

Do you think that 100% of resources are focused on one area? Things are prioritised according to resources.

If you called up today and complained about something and were subsequently told that all resources were deployed elsewhere, you'd by annoyed and rightly so.

Were getting slightly off track anyway. Should such matters be monitored in my opinion ? Yes, in order to prevent stirring up of trouble, which is more about thugs than genuine football fans. Is this massively restricting other duties ? No.

Very true Bobby, however there are massive resources tied up in all sorts of complex matters that the general public have no concept of...or the media.

I'm sorry you feel stereotyped, that's not nice, but as I said earlier, the impact of monitoring such matters will probably have zero impact on genuine fans I believe.

Unfortunately you're argument against stereotyping of fans kind of crashes and burns with that comment.

I have a hell of a lot to say on this matter...and I don't care if it upsets the pc brigade..

First of all I have been to football games through Europe and England both with my club, and country. Have I seen any violence, twice maybe.....and the main one was wolves vs west brom circa 99/00. I am an England fans member and united season ticket holder.

Lets deal with the online banter first...do I dish out banter to players..yes..do I dish out banter to other famous supporters of other clubs yes, do I receive banter photos jokes about my club. Yes. I am a mature adult and I know the difference between football banter and personal.

Now going back to football thuggery, being I travel with England away...I am actually police checked and my passport is checked to see if I am on a banning order. I am not. When England travel abroad we are not only checked at the airport, ESP Luton, but also have british police with us when arrive in host country. On top of that we often have to collect tickets from the fa in the Host country as well.

I have never been involved in football violence, do I dish out the odd wanker sign or shout rent boy or tell an apposing player they are fat...of course ....it is part and parcel of the game.

Sometimes I feel that people only see what the media portrays about us football fans.

"Erm where did I say I wanted football fans exempted from monitoring? I want everyone treated the same.99.9% of football never get involved in trouble."

That figure may or may not be accurate (I dunno) bit 0.1% of football fans is quite a big number AND football fans, well behaved or otherwise, are quite easily identified.

Strathclyde Police, before they were bastardised into Police Scotland, calculated the relationship between defeat at football and domestic violence , acted in anticipation of potential trouble and reduced domestic violence quite considerably.

I had resisted mentioning this but it's worth pointing out there were far more than 50 (check the youtube vids).

An indication of the power certain sections of football clubs' fanbase have is the decision to reverse the sanctions placed on that section of the crowd at one Glasgow football stadium.

It seems a couple of hundred 'fans' dictate football club policy.

"Christ Almighty now football is being blamed for domestic abuse! Fucking hell that's a classic."

Not only classic but absolutely true.

In "Domestic Violence and Football in Glasgow: Are Reference Points Relevant? " from Dec 2012, Alex Dickson, Colin Jennings and Gary Koop at University of Strathclyde found

"This paper contributes to this literature using a new data set containing every domestic

violence incident in Glasgow over a period of more than eight years. We

fi nd that Old Firm matches, where Glasgow rivals Celtic and Rangers

play, are associated with large increases in domestic violence (regardless of the timing or the outcome of the match)"

But surely it’s a rather arrogant assumption on behalf of any individual “football fan/ player etc” to suggest that just because the issues the police are choosing to target do not effect them on a personal level that every other “football fan/ player etc” must feel the same as them.

How do you know they aren't monitoring them more closely?

It's very simple to monitor things online, they look for key words etc. the way I see it the football community has been warned that they are expected to clean up their act, why is that a bad thing?

If you're a footy fan and doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about, if you are using racist, homophobic or sexist abuse either online or at the games you deserve what ever punishment you get, regardless.

I lived on a street next you Edgeley Park (Stockport FC & Sale Sharks play there) the difference between the two sets of fans was staggering. So in my book this latest thing is a good move because football is so popular in the UK it needs to sort it's self out

Reading through the thread the argument against the police targeting football related antisocial behaviour seem not only poorly constructed and fundamentally flawed it appears based on nothing more than selfish opinion rather than any genuine concern about the victims and vulnerable members of society who suffer because of a tolerance of moronic behaviour....

Just a thought.

Is truth an absolute defence to an accusation of abuse?

If, for example, a voice from the terraces describes a certain player as 'a wee, baldy heidit ****' and that player is, in fact, short of stature, blessed with a very wide centre parting and prefers sexual partners of his own gender - is that abusive?

i dont know what heidit means but i think intent comes into it.....if the intention in observation then no need for swearing (taking **** as a swear word). if the intent was to offend, humiliate or antagonise then its abusive.

remember as well in this day and age the recipient doesnt need to find it offensive for it to be considered so, all those hearing or reading it can find it offensive and you can be in as much trouble

You wonder just how effective it can be.

If, for example, it were easy (or even possible) to track down criminals or potential criminals from their online presence - you'd think, given the world's obsession with money and the combined resources of the planet's law enforcement agencies + the banks etc, that identity theft, phishing etc would have been eliminated by now.

Last I looked, it hadn't.

That said, there will always be those who go out of their way to make themselves easy to catch but they're probably not the ones we have to worry about.

Rugby fans can drink in their seats

Football fans can't !

Total agreement using rugby as example both league and union mix before during and after game rarely do you get trouble.

My theory is with rugby the aggression is on pitch played hard and of a player stays on ground they are genuinely injured unlike the footy players who roll around as if shot even if no contact made.

Until such time soccer fans can be trusted to mix then segregation has to continue. Behave like animals be treated like animals.

As said the minority give rest bad name but fans have to take responsibility and shop anyone involved in trouble as only way to address the issue.

Football fans do mix in most non league games. I went to a game last week and had a pint while talking to a opposition fan. Ive been to championship games and been in the same pub and chatted to away fans.

Football isn't as bad as it's made out to be and rugby isn't as perfect as it's made out to be(care to remember the Hull v Hull KR violence a few years ago?).
