In quite a few job apps now you're expected to provide a CRB/DBS at your employer's expense, has anyone ever had to provide one?

I did today. Really such a dumb system, having to extensively prove who you are just so they can search your records. They must get a lot of identity thieves.

yeah but without it we would have a lot more Ian Huntley's around so a necessary evil although they are kind of like GUM clinic tests in that they are only relevant on the day they are done, you could go and kill someone the next day and it wont show up till next time its checked.

Yes I had to have one for my degree course and my job, DBS is an improvement though as for example I am signing up for supply agencies now and instead of having a CRB done by each person I sign up with, anyone else just needs to register to be able to view my DBS info on some sort of system. I pay £13 a year for the update service which keeps it in line with regulations. If the updates lapsed I would have to apply for a new one.

I'm bard from the USA for 15 years for crimes Icommited ton my crb check it shows up that I'm a convicted drug dealer witch I admit. But when I tried to get a visa to chihargo I had to pay ten pounds to the police for a intelligence check and it just had numbers on it to witch I thaught ment nothing but it told the police that I had been involved in premiere league footballers carrers . Drugs .and guns and thay gave me a 15 year ban ....... In my eyes if you have a criminal record your not gona get into the USA

of course you're not!!! you would get into very few countries with a criminal record, its almost as if you are not meant to have one

It isnt just to prevent identity thieves in most jobs even if you work in a shop or mcds you come into contact with minors...wont be long and everyones dna will be in the system also

I dont see why people think its daft if there is nothing to hide whats the problem....also its at an employers expense

Honestly?......no I don't think someone could possibly explain away being a drug dealer with firearm offences and expect to be allowed into a country that would prefer you didn't enter.

I know that sounds harsh and I'm not judging you, but I don't think a country owes anyone anything when it comes to their own border control regulations.

I had to jump through hoops to get into the US but I did it in the correct manner....They usually are more accepting if your crime was committed more then 15 years ago..however being convicted of drug and gun offences will of course bar you..they have their own issues with drugs and guns without having to worry about foreigners coming in with those crimes...

and now there are tighter controls. its not a fool proof system but in the most part it works.

Probably just my personal experience then but I think they need to make it easier to prove your identity. After a horrid few years, I have my name and address on a lot of paperwork and yet seemingly none of it was a valid form of ID. Three times I had to go to see this guy about the DBS and even when I brought what he wanted, he sent me away. Tell me thats not just being difficult for the sake of being difficult?!

Shame we are not like the usa and stop drug dealers and other criminals coming in to our country. In my opinion drug dealers should not just be banned from a country for 15 years but locked up for more then that

Surely you do not believe its just foreigners that are drug dealers and criminals. Vast majority are born in the country they break the law in but hey lets always blame foreigners.

I have, I am not up to date with how they search, but do they search foreign countries if you are not a British National or have lived in another country a while?

I have to have them done frequently because of my job. I would rather have a system like it in place than nothing at all. If it only saves one child or vulnerable person from abuse then its worth all the hassle.

The new DBS system leaves me a little worried. The certificate is sent to you but not to the organisation requesting the information. This does make it more portable but I am now wary of people saying their check has not come back.

I await the protocols for the new searchable database.

yes, they do a search through Interpol. but that has problems if the country of origin does not have accurate records.

it also depends on the level of search asked for and the reason for it.

I totally agree, but i lack the knowledge of how they would. Possibly the only answer would not allow entry to those from countries with incomplete or inaccurate records, or if allowed entry restrict their the jobs they can work in? "
Maybe if they started with these checks before allowing them in? I dunno...but I know previously there have been some horrendous slip ups....I was just curious to see if things had changed.

Anyone needing checked is likely to be being monitored/ supervised in their workplace whilst the real danger comes from the likes of Robert Black.

i don't work directly with in this are but i have been trained on it an try to keep me self up date on process changes, on no i don't think its improved.

MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION (an i'll try not to get to ranty) is the out sourcing of such services to private sector companies (many non UK based) who offer their services at a cut price rate by imposing unrealistic an mostly un-achievable targets on staff.

leaving the base level workers with a choice of do the job properly or get paid.

That's not really much of a choice.

I'm a foreigner, and when I had to have my CRB check to work with minors, as far as I know they did not check with the Australian police if I had a criminal record there. I think at the time I had been living here for about 8 years. Of course I would have had no problem with them doing so.

While it isn't a perfect system, it is a necessary one. I mean it only picks up those crimes where a person has actually been caught. What if people had committed a crime whilst on holiday abroad? Caught or not?

If a person is convicted of a crime in another country, are the authorities in their home country notified of said conviction? I have no idea.

it is my understanding that the checks where never done by the police, but a division the came under the home office (i could be wrong) staff where advised not to disclose their job due to its nature. I believe most people said they where civilians working for the police as it was close to the truth but your average bobby did not do CRB checks.

The level of check done is dependent on the request and the job. no all countries up date their records an certainly not Interpol and other such databases.

you may not pass a CRB check for peeing up a tree in public because of the type of offence an its classification. I don't think there will ever be a system with out flaws.

Trust me I know it's not just foreigners, of course not. I was responding to the post about the usa allowing foreign criminals to their country.
