We're thinking about going camping and just wondered if any of our fellow fabsters could recommend anywhere? We're not bothered about travelling and will be taking the kids........ Yes I know this isn't tourist information forum before some smart arse comments, I was really just interested to hear from other campers.... I'm sure there must be some!

I always used to enjoy 'Sandyballs' which is apt for this site, nice location being near the New Forest which is not too far from you and plenty of facilities.

The possibilities ....

Having kids, I presume you don't want to travel too far (are we there yet ? )

So I'd stick within three hours ...

So limits you to south coast, south west and south wales (gower ?)

What tickles your fancy ?

Fellow CamperVanners here,(currently in the van in France) we've been to some beautiful sites around the New Forest and can second the Sandyballs recommendation.

Hollands wood is nice near Brockenhurst as is Ocknell. If your looking for activities to keep the kids busy Burnbake on Studland is nice.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Unfortunately sandy balls is more expensive than some hotels! Probably wouldn't go much further than penzance or cardigan travel wise.

have you thought of the isle of Wight as the kids would love the short ferry ride as it starts the holiday of in a nice way.

the island is small enough to get round all of it quite easily, traffic isn't horrendous and some nice beaches

if they get bored easily you could look at somewhere like languard in shanklin so they have a outdoor and indoor pool small club house etc rather than being in a field with nothing

check the ferry prices though as think they went up in time for the school hols but as your not to far away you could get a early or late trip and sometimes the ferry company's have deals with the holiday sites

Very true Sam, but all the places I went to as a child have fallen Into the sea! We went a couple of years ago on a day trip. Ferry from gosport to portsmouth, bus to southsea, hovercraft to Ryde, train to sandown! Then the whole lot in reverse!

Check out shell island its north of cardigan in llanbedr between barmouth and harlec

Depends on what you are after though, constant kids activity its not the best place, chill let the kids run free bbq etc its hard to beat it,

Some great camp sites down on the Isle of Purbeck near Swanage - Toms Field is one of the best known - not a million miles from you guys either!

My favourite sites are Birchwood Tourist Park in Dorset, and Fforest Fields in Wales.

Make sure your tent is properly waterproofed and you pack your wet weather gear.....I'm being a bit of a party pooper here aren't I?!

If you like a quiet site then I found a fantastic little campsite near Snowden....no booking....noise curfews...lovely site....lovely area.....not much for the kids to do unless you like walking....a LOT

There's a nice one near Northleach in the Cotswolds which allows campfires and has a low ropes course and lots of woodland to play in.

We also like Brockenhurst in the New Forest.

Have stayed at Sandy Balls too but thought it was a bit of a waste being down there but not actually in the forest.

Fareham

Woodlands in Devon is great if you have kids. The site is in a theme park / kids zoo and you get full access all day every day (the kids would NEVER get bored). The pitches are on hard-standings with large protective mats provided and the shower blocks are excellent - they also have 'family bathrooms' ... lockable rooms with a shower, sink and loo in one place so you can sort the kids out in private.
