If you lived on a main road with no driveway or your own personal place to park, can you put a traffic cone there to stop others parking there.

The reason i ask is this cos i live on a main road and there is a holiday home there and they come back abt 5 times a yr to stay there, seeing as its a main a road i usually park outside there house, but from the very first time i met them they got my back up by knocking on my door late at night while every body was sleeping and told me to move my fucking car, now if they had asked nicely i wud of done so but now its a ongoing thing wen they are down on holiday, so now they resorted to using a traffic cone, are they allowed to do this on a main road.

sorry i went off a bit but they really make my blood boil, coming here a few times a yr and think they own the whole street cos it winds everybody up not just me

No they are not - it is a public highway and we pay our road tax to use it. If in doubt get the bobbies out. He may, potentially, be breaking the law. And being abusive on your doorstep is most likely to get him a ticking off from the police at the very least.

Unless its a private access road or similar, or you are causing an obstruction ie blocking their driveway etc you can park wherever you want

thank you guys, i checked with the police before abt parking there and they said as long as the car is legal i can park any where as long as im not blocking there access to there property which im not, but i have not asked them yet abt the traffic cone, but i might just enquire tomorrow with the police.

We had a neighbour like that where we lived years ago, she used to leave cones out for when her daughter visited. Her daughter only visited once a month, so I just moved the cones.

She did complain to us, in fact she threw a strop, so I just told her to go and get the police as I was parked legally. We didn't hear from her again, but got some scary stares from her

technically he is touching your property with putting notes on car so technically that's criminal damage, tell him you'll be speaking to police about the damage he is doing to your car,

, all very petty i know but just play him at his own game, i love neighbourly feuds lol

^^^^^ This. They have NO right to a parking space on a public highway even in front of their own house. If he's leaving notes on your car, it's harassment! Report and good luck!

in a word NO only official can cone road or rear ocations i.e. for a skip .... I'd politely tell him to fuck off as he can't tell you where/where not to park !! as long as your taxed and insured mot ...... parking around my area is nightmare but common courtesy helps well most the time lol

It's not criminal damage unless he actually causes damage when leaving the note - but it may, as has been said, be harassment.

Public road as long as you are not blocking an access or blocking the road you can park there. I had this problem a few times. Nothing has ever come of it.

I had similar problem with people across the road from me. Me and one of my house mates have a car each and I have a work van, all 3 can't park on drive way so last one home has to park across the road, we don't block the drive or obstruct the road but the bloke there keeps telling us he's going to call the police. He's called them 3 times now and they can't do anything. Now he's threatening to get his son to come and sort it, nothing's happened yet, and if it does, I hope he's not a big guy

even blocking someones drive is a grey area, something like if the cars on the drive you can park if its not you can't or maybe its the other way round.

Tell them to call the police and that if they do not stop harassing you YOU will definitely call the police - then follow through with the threat. Don't phone the emergency number though - you should be able to phone a non-urgent number. That's what I did with my neighbours and I've had no trouble since the police went round.

Gave them the shock of their lives on a Sunday morning. I had to wait a day before the police arrived but since it was not urgent that was ok by me.

Log everything he does, get cctv camera ok the front if you can,

When he comes round tell him if he has a problem to call the police you have taken advice and you are legally within your right to park there,

He is the one with a problem not you he is the one that needs to raise this with the police and they will tell him there is no legal reason to insist you move your car

Stay on the standpoint if you had been polite you would have moved it but due to their attitude and intimidation tactics you refuse to move your car or discuss the matter all correspondence has to be by post or via police / solicitor

He sounds an idiot and if you show you are a, not a push over and b, aware of your rights reckon he will back off,

any and every excessive behaviour CALL THE POLICE not to have him arrested but to get the incident logged on the police records

hope it works out, I run a motorhime we are not all morons promise,lol

I have parked my mums car there 2nite as my car has no mot and is parked off the road in a friends drive, so he has no idea whose car is parked there, but wen he had parked up and got out, he was having a good look thru the window to see wot was in the car, really wish i had put my toys and whips on the seats now to get him thinking lol

Make sure you are annoyingly polite with them and don't swear.

After all swearing in a public place is a public order offense - especially if you are offended! And keep any notes they leave, especially if the language is aggressive or offensive.

Then call your local community support officer (the non emergency number) and ensure that when speaking to said officer you remain calm, polite, possibly bemused - oh and lets not forget offended by the vile nasty language and the aggression!

As a previous poster said, call the police for anything he does however minor as police will log all complaints and incidents on a file, then if he does turn nasty the police have a whole load of info on him

This counts as an SGL (signing, lighting, guarding) offence and is subject to a FPN if he had no notice (which he def would obtain unless he is having works done to or connecting to his property) or permit for it.

Your best course of action is to contact your local council highways/streetworks inspector on report them.

We had this with a neighbour who kept parking ACROSS our driveway.

We ended up talking to the police about it. We were told that they couldn't do anything if they were obstructing the access to the driveway. They could only act if the car was on the driveway already and it was blocked in.

Having been down this road the best thing to do is to report them for coming to your house and abusing you. There is a record of it then. If it happens again then you can report it again and they will usually pop round and "'ave a quiet word" with them. In the meanwhile don't do anything to antagonise them. Having said that parking on the public highway and not blocking anything can;t really be viewed as wrong!

Because life is too short for pointless arguments? Particularly as by the OP's admission he is rarely there so for most of the year she can park where she wants anyway.

And to be honest the OP seems to enjoy goading him by deliberately parking there knowing it will get a reaction which is just as pathetic.

I live by a hospital, we get staff and visitors parking in our road daily, sometime it can be mildly irritating to park a few minutes walk away but the day I let something so trivial bother me will be sad day indeed.

If he had come to the house and asked nicely to move my car then yes by all means i would move my car for when they came back for holidays but seeing as he banged the door very late night at night when the whole house was asleep and said move your fucking car, i dont see why i should go out of my way for them when they are here on holiday. So my attitude now is first come first served so to speak

But she has also parked her parents car there today in an act seemingly designed to antagonise him as she is waiting for his reaction. We are only hearing one side of the story here and in my opinion the OP loses the moral highground by deliberately goading him.

As the Op portrays him the guy sounds like a total dick with a pretty sad life, why not just take satisfaction from that?

When I was a lad I worked on a small trading estate that didn't have much spare parking spaces.

The guys from the unit next door were always parking in my bosses spot. My boss would have to go round and ask them to move their car.

One day he had to go round three times to ask them to move their car and three times they took no notice.

He had to go out somewhere and told them that if their car was still there when he got back he'd move it himself.

Anyway, he got back and lo and behold the car was still there. My gaffer went in the works, got the forklift and put their car in the skip.

They never parked there again

If someone is harassing and abusive then I would not back down. Been down that road before and ended up having to move. Some people are simply bullies - and you should always stand up to bullies. It is never energy wasted when you do.

But it's not about backing down. It's about the fact that some arguments are not even worth getting in to. And getting stressed that your neighbour gets pissed off 5 times a year that you park outside his house ranks pretty low in my list of priorities. I think I'd rather take the viewpoint that the house been empty most of the year makes my life much easier.

If someone bangs on my door and is abusive late at night that is not about simply being a bit pissed off. It is confrontational, bullying and intimidating tactics which obviously work when people do not stand up to them. Simple to me. I've just had this with my own neighbour. I live in my mum's old house - he used to scare her. He tried the same with me - it did not work. I stood up to him, called the police and threatened legal action. All quiet since. Problem solved.

This idiot needs someone to say 'NO' to him, evidently, and really mean it.

I never got my mother to park her car there, i parked it there as mine is off the road, so ive been using my mothers car as sum one else was parked where she usually parks, but we dont get arsey and tell them to move there car cos its my mums place to park, its a public road and you can park anywhere, all i wanted to know was can you put a cone there to reserve your parking space, so i am not goading him at all
