I love the books. Just watched the latest film and was very disappointed. Anyone else feel the same about it?

Have thought the books have been going downhill but I have enjoyed reading them. Not seen the film

With the number of books Patterson puts his name to each year, I'm not surprised the books have been going down hill. I can't make my mind up if he's more of a franchise than an author these days.

very often a book is better then a film, if you read the book first then you have a mental picture of how things look, the film maker often has a differant picture, hence films are often not as good, it cant be

I agree. I'm a voracious reader and can't keep up with him, he seems to have a new book out at least once a fortnight.

Haven't seen new film, in fact didn't know there was one, off to google I go

I think with Patterson, he is doing a lot of co-author books, which I think he is just putting hos name to. I am no where near up to date with the books, but have really enjoyed the first ones. Lots of suspense and a good pace. Nice page turning holiday fodder.

The thing I didnt like about the latest film is that they turned him into a butt kicking action hero, rather than the pyschologist/detective he is on the books. ONe other thing that bugged me was that they turned his best mate and sidekick into a white guy, when in the books he is a hulking great black guy.

I thought the 2 films with Morgan Freeman in were much truer to the books and Morgan is more how I would have visualised Cross.

All in all a big disappointment, but as someone has said, Patterson seems to be more about a money making franchise recently, so maybe he did not care about quality.

Isn't this film meant to be set before the books tho? I think it's what happens with his wife etc that turns him from a cop to the forensic agent he is in the other films?

I love the Alex Cross books and have read them all, loved them but some werent as good as others, i did like the latest thou

Not seen this film as its got crap reviews and after reading the books i have an image of all the characters but in a film they are sooooooo different to how i think they are.

Same with the Jack Reacher books, i love them and wasnt sure about Tom Cruise playing him as he looks nothing like Jack Reacher is portrayed however the film and Tom Cruise were good and he did indeeed look how i imagined him lol

Apparently its based on the 12 th book, so no excuse there. Just a poor realisation of the books to screen

from a town near you

its a bit like the jack reacher film,i cant bring myself to go see it with the little fella in it,seems the authors are more interested in money than being true to a character they have spent years building up,so much so that they have a physical description at the start of each book now and then go and put a 5ft 6in actor in

Sorry I seem to have hijacked your thread

To be fair, that wasn't a bad film... and I take loathe Cruise as an actor! That said, I haven't read the books

That's why I won't watch Jack Reacher as I have a mental image of a battered hulking Daniel Craig not one of a 5 ft dwarf with dark hair...

The Lincoln Rhymes books were brilliant written by Jeffrey Deaver however for the film 'The Bone Collecter' I don't ever recall the lead being described as looking anything like Denzil Washington in the books....in fact I am sure he was white so it completely killed the film for me.

I'm pretty sure the writer must have some input in to how the character looks.....they spent years helping the reader to build this mental image up only for it to be shot down after watching the film...

Ah, Daniel Craig... the reason why I wont go to anymore Bond films. Ugly charmless twunt... I am sure its not how Fleming imagined him. In fact Fleming refers to Bond as looking like Hoagy Carmichael... very un-Craig like!

I can remember when Sean Bean started playing Sharpe, he wasn't what I was expecting, but he grew on me.

The Alex Cross movie starring Tyler Perry? Its abysmal. Utterly utterly appalling and hardly worthy of a direct to VHS release!

I went to a Q&A session a few years ago with Jeffery Deaver and someone asked pretty much this exact question. His response was basically - 'The book is the book, the film is the film and the two are different. If you don't like one there is always the other. Plus I got paid a lot of money for the rights and once you sell them they can pretty much make and do with it what they like'

Personally, I don't like the film, not for Denzel's performance, but because they butchered the ending, changing the killer and removing what was (in the book) a well written raison d'être for his behaviour and choices.
