Yes that's the amount rail fares are due to go up. Yet again above inflation rail increases are on the cards, edging people out of the public transport system and onto the roads. I think it's disgusting even though I'm a rail worker. I sympathise with all the commuters out there

The argument being made is that the cost falls on rail users not on everyone through the tax subsidy. I don't think a 4.1% raise will go down well with those commuting to work in London, where it costs so much anyway.

I was absolutely staggered by the cost of the fare it cost a friend of mine to get from London to Ipswich and back to meet me for a drink!

I rely on trains for meets quite often and its ridiculously expensive to some places already so im really not looking forward to the increase!

True, that is the argument and it's crap. Rail franchises still get subsidy, and revenue support is written into all the contracts. Suffice to say the shareholders of rail companies haven't lost out since privatisation. Only commuters have.

Im learning to drive as bus services being cut and other fares going up... Won't be held to ransom... Already gad a 4 year pay freeze to contend with...

being in the trade and the company i work for is often slagged off for it being our fault

sorry but its not its the train operators who decide this not us

I'm not going to be naive enought to say that BR was wonderful. As it wasn't. But I am going to be a lefty and say that private enterprise has not improved the service or led to more rolling stock or routes being added.

The problem with BR was that it needed proper management. There was an attitude of "oh well it's a big company", so waste wasn't cared about.

Now it's gone too far the other way. Private companies have a bottom line for their shareholders so work is deferred until absolutely necessary then managed to the minute, and ageing rolling stock is patched up to keep it going from A to B on time.

Rail fares are deliberately kept in a state of confusion for most, just so that a few percent of people who can't be bothered or don't know better to shop around, or those who simply are tied to a schedule, pay through the nose.

Anyway, we'll be having these moans about the NHS when it's fully privatised in a few years.

Can't see the trend reversing as they've been going up every year without fail.

We also use public transport to get to meets/clubs but think I'll go back to driving. But even the costs for driving go up annually. Cor blimey, no breaks anywhere

The rise quoted is set by the government, 3.1% plus RPI. The train operators add the amount they feel is adequate on top of it. In some cases up to 5%. This is not good news for those that have stagnant or minimal pay rises for the last decade.

Been an absolute joke since privatised. I travel across country regularly to take my daughter to see her dad. Advance tickets no good as it involves 3 different train companies. If eg train b is running late and I miss train c I have to buy 2 new full fare tickets then n there. Which are extortionate and that's on top of the tickets I've already bought. Company b won't compensate if the train arrived within a 'reasonable' time which is legally subjective. Company c blames company b, not their fault.

Prices generally are beyond most people's pocket. I'm job hunting at mo but frankly unless it pays very well (rare in this economy) I'm having to restrict my search to local bus rides in an area with one of the lowest job vacancy rates in the country.
