I may sound thick as I hardly play the lotto but ...when I get a lucky dip and there is 6 numbers ... which 1 is classed as the bonus ball as it doesn't tell you

Yes so if you have five numbers drawn but miss the 6th you've another chance with the 7th hence bonus ball

Think of the bonus ball as a "bonus chance to win a jackpot". If you match 5 of your numbers but miss the final number (that would have won you the main jackpot) then it gives you a second go. Obviously the order doesn't matter so you could miss the first ball but hit the next 5.

The "bonus" jackpot isn't as big as the main jackpot, but it is much bigger than the prize you would receive for matching 5 numbers without the bonus ball.

So essentially the bonus ball does nothing, unless you have matched exactly five of the main numbers.
