Just looking again at the image and reading Carl Sagan's comments. Everything is in perspective and you realise how you should be thankful for what you have and realise, in the greater context, don't worry be happy

Thinking about it some more, wouldnt it make more sense to beam out a medley of songs at full volume by such as the Wombles, Renee & Renato and them who did the Birdie Dance and then if there are any aliens out there, then were likely to at least get a message : "Turn that f***ing racket off"

Whats really hard to grasp, er excuse the shaky typing, is that the blue dot picture was taken from what 1bn miles away?

Just imagine what it would look like from the edge, say 11nm lights years worth of miles away. Although i believe the boffins use km, or A units.

No, the space craft was nowhere near the edge, massively nowhere near the edge. But i take your point, is there an edge.

I suspect that all of what we think of as the great universe may just be inside Ms Gods beach ball.

If you google it you will see that it was a picture taken by an early spacecraft launch. A bit deep i know, but it always serves to remind me of the importance of being a decent person and not being too materialistic when you consider our place in the scheme of things. And, carl sagen, an amazing individual who really had a grasp on things

I started one about super gas clouds and the great images that are now available. The space nerds aren't around anymore and if there are new ones they are lurkers not posters.

Ah well, apparently you cannot buy a TV licence if you live outside even if you wish to, so maybe the Aliens are scared of receiving a monthly letter and the odd visit by a nerd with a clipboard so they keep schtum.

I have no idea if aliens exist. The point is everyone is so preoccupied with their own importance (well, a lot of people are at least)' it is nice to see things in the grander picture. Looking at this picture, it is reminiscent of a man looking at an ant hill. Watching all the individuals rushing around, who no doubt believe their task is so important, but when viwed from our perpesctive it is nothing more than a small bump in the ground. Right, i will shut up now as i am rambling,lol

The"Pale Blue Dot" image was taken 3.7 Billion MILES away. If Voyager 1 had taken the photograph from 1 billion light years away, it would have been outwith the bounds of our own galaxy, where as Voyager 1 was still inside our own solar system.

Where I live I often drive over a big hill and from the top you can see for miles. You can see little towns sitting in the valleys. Masses of green fields and tiny little cars driving along. It looks so beautiful... until you look closer.

For the self-important the fact that it's all so insignificant may be reason enough to be utterly selfish and even hurtful to others. In the grand scheme of things what would it matter?

I prefer the idea of living well in the here and now, that every act carries it's own importance and ripple effect on the world and the people and things around us.

It's like paintings, isn't it? The completed picture, viewed at the correct distance, can be breathtaking. Get up close and it's just dirty little marks that make no sense.

Yes, im pretty much aware, thats why i posted it was taken from some 1bn miles away, in question format.

I also made the point that 1bn miles, or 3.7bn MILES is itself insignificant when compared to the edge of the universe, said to be some 11-13bn LIGHT YEARS away. Some difference.
