Cheques take sooooooo long to clear...I mean they have been around since Fred flintstone you thought they would of found a solution....sorry waiting for one to clear and I have 96p in the bank

It's also to ensure the finds are in the account. Not many people realise this, most cheques clear within 3-4 days, But in reality it can be up to 7 working days.

My ex works in a bank, and every so often they get one returned to the bank and the funds are returned/ recalled for one reason or another.

It's because the law on cheques remain unchanged.

They must be physically presented to the originating bank/branch for signature verification and checking of funds clearance.

They haven't bothered changing the law as they're just phasing them out. Few businesses now accept cheques.
