LGBT dilemma

A nightclub in Inverness has been having LGBT nights on the first Tuesday of every month for a few months now. Last night I finally managed to get to one. Wished I hadn't.

To start with the choice of music was awful. Someone obviously has a stereotypical idea of what music at a gay club is like and we were subjected to the full gayer playlist including Steps greatest hits and the dreaded YMCA. Apparently we don't like normal music.

Then there was supposed to be a drag queen hosting. Now to me that's fine, was expecting a proper OTT caricature drag act taking the piss out of the punters and a bit of singing. What there was turned out to be a 20 year old TV. Yes nice figure and would be what people here like to describe as "convincing", apart from the fact she couldn't walk in her 2 inch heels unless supported and was bandy legged without. And all she did was to mime along to a lady gaga song! I do hope she wasn't paid.

Most of the punters in were definitely neither LGB or T (apart from yours truly and hostess). A couple of gay male couples turned up but for the most part it was bar staff there on their night off to make up the numbers and blokes who sussed it was the only place serving beer late.

Inverness is quite remote and hasn't caught up with other parts of the country in terms of having some sort of scene for non-straights. This place is the only one doing anything in fact. This is why people choose to move away to where they will have more social options. So while I'm glad somewhere is trying to cater for the LGBT scene I think they've gone about it all wrong. I've been all over the country to scene clubs and bars and know what needs to be done differently.

So do I track down the venue management and say "how about doing this differently? It may benefit you in the long run". Or do I not bother and condemn Inverness to another decade in the past? Metaphorically speaking.

I think that you should maybe discuss the idea with the venue management as 'ways to make it a more fabulous evening'

I mean it sounds like someone out there in Inverness is trying to create some sort of LGBT scene, it would be a shame for it to fail on its first outing (no pun intended).

With your experience suggest running the night, and give people what they want.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Offer ideas gleaned from your experience. Perhaps look at what demand there could be for the club? If the area has you and one other gay in the village then it may never be viable.

Well as its technically a city and has quite a large population the odds dictate there must be a certain number of people who fall under the LGBT umbrella. I only found out about it by accident, not through their advertising.

Have mailed them and not said anything negative, just that it was good to see and I might have some ideas that'd help get more people through the doors.

Hey...no worries! !!

To the OP.. Brighton just hosted their Pride weekend... it's also a city and known for it's tolerant attitude.

One whole part of the city Kemp Town is known as the gay village. It's chocka with bars clubs shops etc that cater for LGBT. It hosted a street party for 25,000 and the parade itself attracted 100,000.

Jodie - to coin a phrase... you can't be 'the only TV in the Highlands' can you..?? From your posts on here, if anyone could turn that into a GOOD LGBT venue, even once a week, it would be YOU. Okay, Inverness is not exactly the heights of a Bohmenian way of life, but there will be more than a smattering of TV's etc up there, I'm sure - never assume anything, remember???

I would go so far as to say YOU ought to be the Compere/Hostess..?? You have a rapier-like wit and sense of humour, and you couldn't do any worse than the present 'incumbent'!!

Go for it, girl!!!!!!

ted.

Yeah I know, but that's a bit far for me to travel for a night out. My nearest cities with any sort of scene are Edinburgh and Glasgow, but both are the best part of 200 miles away. Also get to Leeds a couple of times a year when poss. So you can see why something local might be good.

Prides and Sparkle are all well and good in the summer, but this is an all year round deal for me.

Good idea to give them some tips. It will all depend on who attends though. If there's enough LGBT people to go then fair enough but if it's full of blokes wanting late night beer then I wouldn't bother.

I used to go to gay clubs with my mates in Blackpool and it was great... until the straight people started invading. They ruined it. The atmosphere was totally different.

Glasgow

If its any consolation even in Glasgow the scene is fairly small. A few clubs n bars for such a big city.

Just an update for those who may be interested.

Had a good chat with the manager today and he liked my ideas, took on my criticisms. Am now helping to promote the night across the area using social media and LGBT sites and forums. Will also be on hostess and greeter duties for the next few months

Loads of big companies suppirt LGBT, and councils..

Eg saw Asda at pride.

Wonder if club could target companies to invite their staff? Widen the publicity.
