Nr Chester

We have both recently been enjoying a few films, French, Swiss, Austrian plus more.

All subbed but excellent movies, The Piano Teacher, Irreversible, 13 (Tzameti), last night Mesrine 1 Killer Instinct with Vincent Cassell.

Do you like them, more recommendations, other actors/actresses of this calibre ?

13 Assassins is great if you like Japanese samurai movies.

Also Battle Royale

Any of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong made movies.

Japanese classics such as Yojimbo and Seven Samurai.

Jean de Florette and the sequel Manon des Sources are excellent.

Korean's Old Boy grips you right till the end.

I omitted it because everyone should have already seen it, or at least the western remake, The Magnificent Seven.

Heard about Amelie' yeah, must watch that sometime. Watch Life of Pi Soxy,you might lke that too x An Indian boy follows three religions, sets sail with his family and their zoo to Canada. A story of the search for ones soul and spiritual journey. Very good.

Never really been into any martial arts films Mr Who, seen Battle Royale though. Inliked that. And Nikita tbh

9th Company is also brilliant. It follows a group of Russian recruits from training then into deployment in Afghanistan. Kind of like a Russian version of Full Metal Jacket.

The Girl on the Bridge, Betty Blue, Cinema Paradiso, Gertrude....so,so many. Recently, The Lives of Others - it's an instant classic. In general they have far better characterisation, emotional involvement and plotting than Hollywood trash.

I think my favourite move of all time is Il Postino which is impossible to watch without choking back the tears.

I am hooked on most of the Nordic Noir that is broadcast on Saturday nights on BBC 4. Not quite in that genre but even more gripping was 'Borgan'.

Noted lads, we always struggle and know nothing about latest releases. Not unto action, nor sci fi really so films like this we enjoy for the spectacle and not stars,budget.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Lives of Others is an excellent film. I also love films like Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Red Cliff etc. If you're into cartoons look at Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle.

Most films directed by Pedro Almodovar, Luc Besson or Lars Von Trier are usually worth watching. For action, Bessons Taxi is good (way better than the Hollywood rehash) and of course his classic Ronin.

If you like something that will push your perception of film, get Treirs Dogville- no set, few props- just a black sound stage with buildings marked out with gaffer tape but an excellent script and acting means that it takes about 10 minutes for your imagination to submerge in to the story

I was going to suggest La Haine. Such a good film. Again not a film, but a Swedish tv series called The Bridge.
