Job cutters I call them. The more you use them. The more chance they will expand on them in the supermarkets. Staff dont get replaced when they reduce their hours for whatever reason and when they leave they don't get replaced either. I have even noticed a trick that they use to force you to go to them.

I tried them a couple of times against my better judgement but it seemed that if you had something that had been reduced or was age restricted (like bevvy) and you needed an assistant it took even longer to get through the DIY tills than the staffed ones

I used to get really frustrated with them when they wouldn't scan my item as I moved it across the flat-bed scanner window...

Until a friendly shop assistant showed me the upright scanner function which seems to work perfectly every time...

But my main reservation about all multi user touch screen equipment is the potential for spreading germs as I've yet to see one being routinely cleaned during use....

But saying that the handles on shopping trolleys and baskets must be pretty minging too...

You worked in retail. Does that mean used to? A high percentage of staff don't like them because they cut jobs and most customers prefer to talk or have a person assist them. Not a machine.

To save money. Per 4 self scan checkouts. You have 1 (2 on a busy day) to man them. Normally you would have had 4 checkouts and 4 people manning them. Now you have 1 90% of the time and the rest 2. They think customers will use them because it saves you queuing on the normal checkouts and you can't strike all shops as you have to shop somewhere. That is there attitude. In my workplace they have saved about 300 hours on wages a week. Just by putting them in.

Saving money is one spin on it, however with a cost into the hundreds of thousands of pounds to put them into stores and with the 'research' telling us that most customers don't like them, the business case wouldn't be there to spend that kind of money to save the relatively smaller amount on wages, and another thing most supermarkets have been expanding their online departments at the same time as putting in these tills, so is there not jobs elsewhere in the business being created for these replaced till operators?

At the end of the day. If they fill the store with them. You have to die them as there's no where else to go. Secondly its all target based, which is where the research comes from and they are crafty on this. I know how it works. What they do is. Before they used to have say 4 tills open two hours before closing. Now they have 1 till open and self scan. So you make a choice. Queue at the one remaining till, shop elsewhere or use self scan. When they make a sale on self scan. It classes as a person liked it. If they get so many a month/year. They talk about having more of them. Also what they also do is when its not that busy they get colleagues to put it through for the customer and that classes as them liking it too.

Increased staffing means increased overheads which means increased prices.

It's a nonsense about self-checkouts. None of the 3 Aldis near me have them, they pay better than the other supermarkets and the shopping is way cheaper. All this about cost-cutting - rubbish. They aren't passing any savings on to the customer - it all goes to share-holder dividends.

Asda profits are ridiculous and what I notice is staff don't get paid much and hours are cut back a lot. So they get a good reputation for low prices, so they can afford it and the shareholders get paid a fortune.

Imagine how I feel. I got to attempt to promote the bugger. Plus whatever aggro you go through. I have to go through a bit more as I get customers asking me for help to do it and authorise things while I am doing my own shopping. Plus we have to wait for staff to authorise or discount in the process.

They have a security guard, someone on the kiosk and a few to stack shelves where they would have employed 2 or 3 times as many. And are the savings on wages passed on to the customer? Nope. In fact, these two shops are actually dearer than the large Sainsburys which actually have till staff.

i hate using the tills, customer service is a thing of the past, i usually get some young girl chatting to her mate at the end of the checkout, barely acknowledging i am there until its time to pay....chat on your own time love, while you are at work the customer is the focus!!!

List all the reasons you can think of on why you hate them and spread the word. Surely if enough people don't use them. They will get rid of them.

i hate using the tills, customer service is a thing of the past, i usually get some young girl chatting to her mate at the end of the checkout, barely acknowledging i am there until its time to pay....chat on your own time love, while you are at work the customer is the focus!!!

i would much rather use a self service till nd deal with a computer programme than get wound up at a till."

If she's doing that complain. Secondly if their conversation is personal I agree. They should do it in their own time. Sometimes its about the workplace and you can't really do it in your own time as not every colleague has each others number. Either way though they should apologise before serving you. Secondly a person can solve a problem quicker than those machines. Like if the price wrong or something.

"Two of the smaller Sainsbury's near me don't have anything else but these self-checkouts! Customer choice? Ha - what a joke.

Offering you a warm and friendly service. Apart from something sexual. How can a machine do that

They have a security guard, someone on the kiosk and a few to stack shelves where they would have employed 2 or 3 times as many. And are the savings on wages passed on to the customer? Nope. In fact, these two shops are actually dearer than the large Sainsburys which actually have till staff.

The location and square footage cost might be more for the smaller ones. The price points can be that sensitive.

Don't care - I shop in Aldi where they employ actual people and it's cheaper.

I go for the real people option too."

Don't like them. won't use them and I've noticed that you often have to queue to use them anyway, sometimes they are out of order and often the help staff are fully stretched. It's new - but it is not progress.

I tend to shop midweek evenings mostly anyway - so never a problem with queues.

"Remove this item before continuing". It should say "Remove from self scan before scan before kicking it in".

It's actually funny because I remember testing the self service checkouts circa 03 for a major retailer. We were one of the first stores to have them.......

It was a shock, and they were really bad back then,

Now they are still bad, but I use the, when I have to. My local morrisons doesn't have enough people on the till....so because I am impatient when have 6 items I use them....agree the bag area issue is annoying

The thing is people say its great for a few items. The new ones are called hybrids and they have a belt as its designed to take the same amount of shopping as a normal till. Secondly if something goes wrong. You have to wait for someone to find out what the problem is and then get you help. With a person they get you help or even cure the problem instantly. Like alcohol they can look at a customer and put it through without stopping. Can't do that at self scan as they have to take the tags off and authorise it. Same with electrics. Some you need to get them to do it because it has to be swiped manually through the self scan whereas on the checkout. They can do it normally. Apart from the business to save money. I can't see any use for them. By the time an average customer puts a basket through one of them. A normal colleague can put about 4 baskets through their tills.

Because the person knows what you want to scan and the machine is just guessing. That's why there's always going to be that problem

I will defend my self scans till the day I die. They are much misunderstood, much maligned and abused on a daily basis. Please, please, please, when you are in a self scan area, look for the poor harassed host who is trying to help customers with their approvals, reduced items and trying to help them understand exactly what the principles of operation are. You may discover you like what you find. (that could be the machines or even better, the operator )

Well I never get "unexplained item in the bagging area".

For two reasons:

1) I shop at waitrose

2) your all thieves!

Well its time to get used to them as unfortunetly they will be the future. Some of you may of all ready seen the ones with the long belts for people with trolleys to use. I personally think those ones are a good idea but they need to get the software right.

As for they are putting people out of there jobs..well that is not true. No company would make people redundant because they decide to have another 4 Self Service checkouts. What they actually do is when somebody leaves and moves on, they dont replace them by not recruiting more staff. Something else they do is to have pretty much all of the staff in the shops trained to work checkouts/self service tills again so they dont have to recruit.

But the key to self service checkouts is PATIENCE

9/10 times it is actually the customer who makes the mistakes.. Not the machine. Here are some key points -

Dont use Self service when your in a foul mood! Its not the poor cashiers fault your having a bad day!

Read the screen. Dont try forcing your notes in when you havent pressed finish & pay then having a go at the cashier coz 'it wont take your money'!!

Dont put your coins in the slot that says 'receipt'.. Try putting them in the 'coins' bit. Again.. "read'!!

Try not to stamp your feet when its flashing red for the assistant and as you can see she is currently with another person. Have a little consideration and remember you are not the only customer in the shop!!

Few points about that. I know the machine inside out and I thought I knew why it said "item in bagging area". Yet when explain why that is and do it myself. It still happens 10% of the time. You never get that at the main checkouts.

That's the whole point. If you use the self scan checkouts you aren't dealing with anyone, which is why people go nuts when something needs doing. Like a price check as a checkout colleague can check it whilst the customer unloads there shopping and will find out by the time they scan the things through.

I never knew people were that stupid as the machine clearly states where the money/coupons go, etc.

The reason why people get mad as of they had checkouts instead of those tills. You would have a lot more staff and queues would be a lot shorter. So its not the customers fault if they are in a hurry because there was a delay in their queue. Sometimes there is no queue and they are still waiting because the 1 person manning the till assumes everything is fine and ends up chatting to another colleague while you're waiting to be served.

As far as I can tell when anything requires a debate to see if something should be done about it. 9/10 times they should go back to the way the things were before the debate started as it just shows its wrong.

"Unexpected item in the bagging area" usually means an item has been put in but not scanned, usually because the customer thinks they've scanned it but they haven't - usually because they didn't know how to use the machine properly in the first place.

When it comes to the checkouts, it isn't always the case they are quicker. Whenever I have a price check, I need to call for a runner. I can continue scanning, but there may still be a delay for the customer if the shop is really busy and the runner is "running" about like an idiot.

If the shop is extremely busy and queues are forming, we all muck in one way or another, either getting people with baskets and small amounts of shopping to come through self scan, with assistance eg from me or my colleagues and a queue busting call goes out, so that staff from other departments will hop on and help until the queues die down.

Mind you on saying all of the above, here was me defending self scan the other day, went to work yesterday and one machine was determined to drive me bonkers by doing everything it shouldn't have done and then some! lmao

All customers matter - but if I am manning 10 self scan machines and every one is being used and 5 of them need approval/reduced items/dvds put through, I may take longer than usual to get to you. I am only one person, with one pair of hands and am not on rollers skates! I have put that idea forward especially for Friday nights, but they deemed me to be a safety hazard! lol
