"Sounds like a bit of England bashing by the OP....2-1 a bit premature!!! Currently 297-7 with dodgy weather forecast....come back to this thread if your premonition turns out to be correct.. otherwise I shall bounce it " *294-7.....so 34 required to save the follow-on. The weather is going to play a part in this

"I tell you what I reckon England could still win this test, that pitch is turning so swann will have a field day later today when the Aussies bat, if we can get them out quick and have to chase 300 350 in the last day we could just Nick it" Really depends on saving the follow-on. If England do then it'll be great to see some Aussie wickets falling today ....

"368 all out so Australia have a first innings lead of 159. This is looking very interesting bearing in mind that tomorrow maybe a day of rain. When will the Aussies declare?" if it is only a 159 lead... you may see the aussies try and smash 200 in the next 2 sessions... sooner they can get the lead to 300-350 ish, sooner they will declare and give they enough time to try and bowl england out

If , as we're being led to believe, tomorrow is a write-off they would have no time to win the match. It's going to be a fine balance as to what total they make and how confident they are with regard to bowling England out in the time that remains.

"so we drew then??" Australia finished the day on 172-7 .....they lead by 331 with a day (tomorrow) to play. It's likely to end as a draw even if they manage some play. The reports are that it's likely to be affected by rain.

"With a bit luck it will be won in Durham How? You really think Australia have a chance to win this match?" No but we still need to win 1 more match or am I missing something ? And know I don't know much about cricket but from what I have read there it's over 5 tests matches ?

"With a bit luck it will be won in Durham How? You really think Australia have a chance to win this match?" ah England would retain the Ashes as current holders, but would rather them the Ashes outright

"Ha ha go on gloat for the next 50 odd years like the world cup lol" No gloating needed. England have currently won 30 of the 66 series played and Australia 31....so if this turns out a draw it's not a disaster or reason for gloating. Get your bib ready to eat your pie lol

"So, we retain them even though it's a draw today. What if they win the next two, won't that be a draw for the series? Why don't the Ashes live somewhere neutral if that happens?" think how it works is the Aussies this time had to win 3 out of the 5.. as its a drawn game and they're 2-0 down anyway they cant win..

"I understand they can't win (just) but I don't understand why the Ashes remain here if the series overall is drawn." You have to win the series, a draw means they remain with the holders

It contains the ashes from the death of English cricket. From Wikipedia: “In affectionate remembrance of English Cricket which died at the Oval on 29th August 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances. RIP. NB. The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia."

" My words, I've formed my own opinions over the years. Yes, any game that takes 5 days to play must, for the majority of it, be dull with occasional pockets of activity. It cannot be 5 days of constant activity. Even football matches can be boring and that only takes 90 minutes to play. This game is effectively lots of men stood in a field with their hands on their knees. So you can take 25 days to play the bloody series but you can't take an extra day to factor in a tie breaker should it be a draw?? At best this game is just an eccentric quaint old tradition and not a sport. For God's sake you even stop the game for tea! Dull as dishwater, and the retention of the ashes was done thus far by default due to rain. How is that not the truth?
