I am quite new on here but am now verified and did quite a long post but I can't see it on here. Does a post have to be approved before its posted openly?

Posts to the forums don't get moderated/approved before they are put on the forum. A mod may come along later an read the post and depending if you've broken any of the rules remove or lock the post/thread.

... and, if you've been a really bad boy, they might make you sit on the naughty step too... Not that I would know anything about that, of course.... me being a paragon of good manners and respect for others views.....

They also get moved if it's felt that it's in the wrong board
