What's the longest out of date food product you've consumed without adverse health effects ?

Yesterday I enjoyed a yoghurt that had been lurking with intent at the back of my fridge.

I read the date incorrectly first glance and post consumption saw that it was nearly 5 weeks out of date.

I tasted no difference and I'm alive to tell the tale

What's the longest period after a use by date that you have consumed food either on purpose or in error ?

Anyone finished of that box of Quaker oats circa 2009 ?

Did those Kit kats dated 2011 taste a trifle weird and were they soft to the crunch ?

Craig once drank orange juice at a friends assuming it was fresh as it was in the fridge. On closer inspection it was almost 2 years off and had blue bits floating in it...

Use by dates and sell by dates are money making scams made up by the supermarkets to make you throw away food and buy more!!

As long as it smells ok, looks ok, and doesn't have any green or blue bits on its fine

I’ve used an unopened tin of Lions golden syrup that must have been well over 10 years old….

But to be honest I don’t really have a problem with use bye dates,,,,, after-all people drink vintage wine…

Sugar is a natural preservative, bags of sugar don't have dates on them I would have thought this may apply to syrup too.

I hate the stuff with the, once open use in 3 day/ 2 weeks, mainly because it's easy to forget when you opened it

To be honest it tasted just the same as fresh tin, but then again, I believe Honey is meant to stay edible for 100's of years….

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that a jar of honey was discovered which was thought to be over 2000 year old…

You need to be careful with frozen sausages. I know someone that puts whole strings of them up their bum. Then pulls them out like a magician with hankies.

Can't be good eating them afterwards.

With most of the things that will make you seriously poorly like e-coli, salmonella, listeria etc the food will in all likelihood smell, look and taste fine!

Eating out of date food prob won't even make you sick. Plus most foods are good way beyond their sell by date.

Eggs, I don't eat them but usually have half a dozen in the fridge can be there for months and months. Sugar I get through about a bag once every two years

I'm visiting my father in law....he has eggs that are 15 months...yes I did mean months and he claims they are perfectly fresh for use!

Needless to say I am taking nothing but sealed drinks I have purchased myself whilst in this house....

The chickens that hatched from the same batch will be OAP, S!

lets be honest there is paranoia regarding dates and food and confusion re , best before, use before and sell by dates

food never used to have dates on and we used common sensee.g eggs that dont smell, fish that does not smell and has glossy bright eyes

the quality of somefoods can alter with age e,g spices loose stength but they are still edible

some foods can become dangerous such as pate etc

most people would not eat some game if they saw it before it was cooked

aged beef is basically beef where the meat has started to break down a bit. such that muscle fibre is less tough.

with fruit there is a fine line between ripe and rotten.

I have even seen a best before date on salt for goodness sake it is already milions of years old.

years ago people kept eggs for months under isinglass

sorry if the post is disjointed but it is a pet hate of mine food waste

I skin and cook pheasant (and one duck) that I or the vehicle in front knocked over. About 40mph is the optimum speed. Less than that they run off injured and more than that they become a feathered bag of broken bones. We do not hang any game we get and age it. It seems wrong to let it start to rot and we prefer it to not have a 'gamey' taste. You don't break your teeth on gun pellets with roadkill either

im really funny with dates on food, I wont even eat stuff if the date on the pack is the date im eating it, I tend to go thro my fridge and thro things away the day before the date on the pack

I know that but I am not going to leave it on the side of the road for the next thousand cars to drive past it leaving it to rot. I try to avoid hitting them but if I do get one I know it is fresh.

there not made up by supermarkets at all!its the manufacturers of the products that make these,everything needs a sellbuy date!but sum dates are far too early and lots of food goes to waste!most dairy products are fine about a wk past their sell by date as long as there kept in the fridge!fruit n veg is usually fine a few days after the use by date,ive eaten a bar of dairy milk tht was 10 months out of date and it tasted fine and i was fine!the only thing i wudnt eat past its use by date is chicken or fish!

A friend of mine kept a natural yoghurt in his fridge deliberately, he opened it a year and a day after the use by date. Was fine. He said it tasted normal, and he wasn't ill at all.

He's a chef and says all dates on products are bollocks!!!

Slight change of direction, what about pharmaceuticals, I've taken out of date tablets and they still worked. Although I would avoid out of date amitriptyline as I had a weird reaction to that after taking it when out of date.

The US forces were binning millions of $ worth of out of date medicines due to the use by dates, they tested them and found them to be fine. The manufacturers had to pay someone to research the shelf life. Some companies would only pay for two years research so could only put a two year shelf life on them. They don't mind you throwing it out and buying more.
