My private pension is worth diddlysquat. I've already worked longer than many of the current pensioners who were able to retire early. This is so much less of an option now. I don't begrudge pensioners their benefits, just as I don't begrudge it for the unemployed, the underpaid and the disabled. I do begrudge people putting those on benefits into acceptable and unacceptable categories for no good reason. The acceptable category costs us the most and dealing with the current unacceptable category is merely tinkering around the edges. Don't be fooled by the rhetoric around benefit reforms. It's ideological and not financial or even practical in order to reduce our benefits bill.

"I keep pointing out that the benefits bill has very little to do with unemployed scroungers. Most benefits go to older people (as you show) and on the struggling strivers/deserving poor rather than those scrounging/undeserving poor people using their £70 a week to buy enormous televisions and iPhones." I really do doubt this assertion ffs, £70 a week, less all council rent deductions, where do you think they have the disposable income to afford these? , unless on mega, perhaps undeclared, bucks and benefits?

"39 year old, you should have more respect for our pensioners, theyve probably paid more into the system than you,and are bloody well entitled to it." It was clearly tongue in cheek and your post just goes to nicely illustrate my earlier point.

" I don't understand your post. JSA is £72 a week. Yes, housing benefit is paid on top but under the new caps all benefits are rolled together. For someone in London that can mean that their available income is a lot less than £72 a week. Listen to the Food Programme on R4 that was on yesterday about managing food on a budget. Read Patrick Butler's examinations of poverty in this country. Look at my post on wage levels from yesterday.

"It is odd that benefits for pensioners are not means tested like the others are. My mother is quite well off, no mortgage, lots of ISAs,, my ex's mother is church mouse poor and lives hand to mouth. They both get State Pension and free bus passes, as well as the cold weather payment. Yet when the Govt talk about means testing pensioners there's an uproar. Bear in mind we are not talking about people who fought the Germans any more. We are talking about people born in the 40s and 50s and so haven't done much 'for us' at all." They are untouchable because: 1. They tend to be voters who actually go out and vote 2. We have this "they've earned every penny" mentality 3. We continue to feel that "they fought for our freedoms" So, Lord Sugar gets the same bus pass as my dad, the same winter fuel allowance etc. You and I won't be afforded the same sentiments. We're already consigned to working longer before we get anything and by the time we get it I think it will be means tested.

"It's a well known fact that pensioners eat more chocolate, and save more in building societies than other age groups..keeps you lot in Halifax employed!!" Don't forget the gambling they do. I see them coming out of Bingo, pretending they are only there to speak to their friends and keep the loneliness away.

"Shut up. We gave it in the first place. We don't get anything we haven't paid MORE for." That's not always the case. A few weeks in ICU can wipe out a senior citizen's entire NI/ Income Tax contributions over 40+ years. Not that auld yins are the only heavy users of the NHS. Smokers, drinkers, people who throw themselves off mountains etc all cost money. Add in the children of octogenarian cancer sufferers who insist their Mum/ Dad MUST have the latest £100,000 per month treatment and it's easy to see where the money goes.

"Pensioners who have smoked, and drank all their days, have been the backbone of our economy, for over forty years. Without them the youngsters of today would have nothing. Oh except for the ability to whinge, and whine, when it's not all about them. Youths a mask but it don't last, the youth of today, would do well to remember this. " Very true, I mean what else would the NHS do if they weren't dealing with wheezing, unhealthy folk. Just because your old don't mean your nice.
