Does you have to pay your Council for a parking permit?

If so, take a look at this :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23406427

The gist of it would appear to be that the Council can't a) raise general revenues by increasing prices unnecesarily and b) can't make too much of a surplus on any scheme, or if it does make a surplus, it can only be for very restricted use.

Might be worth keeping an eye out for your own Councils revenue raising schemes.

Councils (particularly Labour led councils) are having central government funding cut year on year since the last election, it's therefore no surprise that they are on revenue collecting mode.

No surprise at all, but that doesn't mean they should act unlawfully.

Thought it might be useful to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation.

Try living my way mate. You get a parking ticket if you're even a second late and they have the vultures out on the look constantly as late as 22:00 at night!!

But the insane issue is the cost, £70 for a parking ticket (cut to £35 if paid within 7 days) which is beyond stupid considering it is a parked car. You pay less for a speeding ticket!

I've never paid a parking ticket in my life, I send them a letter saying I conditionally accept their proposal, but ask them for proof of a signed contract between myself and them where I agreed to pay the sum of £xxx.. That way you cannot go to court as there is nothing for a court to adjudicate as you've agreed to accept the monies providing they can give you proof of contract..As after all that is all it is, contracts!

Don't be fooled in to believing you have to pay these criminals your hard earned cash, because you don't.

Glasgow

Everyone wants perfect local services but nobody wants to pay for them.

It surprises me that, at least in Glasgow, city centre parking meters switch off at 6pm.

If these were kept running till 9pm or 10pm there'd be a lot more revenue and it'd come from people who (mostly) choose to come to Glasgow to socialise, as opposed to those obliged to come here for work.

Actually Jane, it's not a myth, it's true, as I have done so many times in the past, and can forward the letter I send to anybody who wishes to do so aswell.

Would advise anybody who wishes to learn about this kind of stuff look up the differences between legal and lawful, and why statutory acts of parliament only apply to those who give to consent to be Governed under them.

Glasgow

I couldn't help but notice the cost of permits.

"In April 2011, Barnet Council more than doubled the charge for a resident's first car permit from £40 to £100.

The cost of a permit for second cars was pushed up from £70 to £125, and for a third car the permit charge rose from £70 to £150."

In Glasgow's leafy west end, the charge is £50 per year.

The latest i managed to get a ticket was 20:45 and because i left my car on a single yellow line so i could walk 5 minutes to a cash point. I accept it wasn't the right thing to do, but at that time of night, near town in my mind it wasn't a big issue.

True everyone wants a better local council but it isn't always about paying extra for it, the amount of bureacracy at councils and the way they waste money is ridiculous. Add to that the quango's that come along and do sod all for a lot of money then you can understand why people get frustrated with them.

To give you an example of wasted money, i know of someone who works in IT as a contractor setting up infrastructure, comms etc etc. She is a contractor and is paid 2/3 times the salary of a permy memeber of staff yet works from home, barely does a full days work and contracts 50 hours a week!! If this was the private sector (or at least the sector i work in) they'd get caught out within a month and be shown the door

I have permits but don't have to pay for them. They were issued to residents a few years back because students and the local college were taking all the car spaces
