"34% Black 40% Asian 22% White Why aren't white young people accessing uni?" Are you sure that's across the board, rather than Sciences (the real ones, Chemistry/Physics/Biology) and Mathematics ? There's been a falloff in those for years amongst white kids.

I won't be looking at source materials until at least tomorrow as I'm off out out shortly.

"Where are your figures from? I found a Guardian article claiming Oxford University was biased against non white applicants... Of course all universities are giving places to NON UK students as they can charge them more, this could skew the figures badly if the stats were used in that way. "They show that white students were more than twice as likely to receive an offer to study medicine as those from ethnic minorities. The disparity persisted for the most able students: 43% of white students who went on to receive three or more A* grades at A-level got offers, compared with 22.1% of minority students."" That's been my understand too, hence a knee jerk reaction.

"I'll say it, others are thinking it but not saying it.... Parenting If I go into my favourite Chinese takeaway on a Friday or Saturday night, there are the owners children doing schoolwork and studying books behind the counter. That's EVERY time I go into this particular Chinese takeaway.... My favourite Indian restaurant (Bangladeshi owners) is the same, his teenage children can always be found sitting at a table at the back studying their text books. These particular parents, of foreign extraction, want the absolute best for their children, and to them that means encouraging/making their children study hard at school and out of school. " Our house had to take a vow of silence for 5 months from Jan-May this year while daughter studied for her A Levels, anything over church mouse volume was deemed too loud ! I wouldn't mind but she'd virtually got BBB of the ABB she required without taking the final exams !

That made me larf - the latter comment that is As for the first bit, wow!! I think it was the years of positive discrimination that made my late father feel as a white British male, that he was marginalised. There are so many situations where other ethnic backgrounds are given preference, as are women for example. We should all just be made to make our own way in life without intervention.

" If you wanna be a bus driver or a scavvy - you won't need a university degree. If you want to be a brain surgeon or a dentist you will and as more and more well qualified applicants chase fewer and fewer jobs, better qualifications will be required.

I don't know what the private school demographics are up in Scotland, but down this way the better private schools have a very large number of British-Chinese students enrolled.

"These figures show the proportion of young people in these ethnic groups who are applying - rather than the absolute numbers. Most applicants will still be white students, because it's a much larger group. So the rise is in the proportion of that ethnicity applying not the percentage of the total. "

"Asian parents will make you go to uni and be a doctor. African parents will make you go uni and be a lawyer White parents want you to be happy. Mass stereotype there 4 ya! " Yes it is, we are white and our son wants to study medicine, he got AAA that he needed for uni, not to mention high scores in UK CAT test but has barely got to the interview stage let alone been offered a place! He had an interview at Manchester uni last year but for every 8 applicants there was only 2 places! We will continue to support/push him in the direction he wanted 2 years ago but he is getting fed up now.

" ............ That is sad and frustrating. Has he considered one of the European universities? Often less expensive and a potential route to meet his goal." It's an option but UK hospitals really REALLY want graduates of UK universities. Add to that the number of overseas medics who come here to do the UK PACES exams and it's clear where the best future lies.

"On my taster day for the uni course I am attending from Sept, there were 36 of us, from several ethnic backgrounds. Of these, 5 of us white, and 3 who were born and raised outside of the UK. I cant wait to start the course with such a diverse group of peers, however could already see there was a Divide of sorts.." In my experience, I think you may be surprised at the diverse groups that form. When I studied, there was the odd close knit ethnic groups, which then went on to disperse and new groups formed. Also, on my course we were often put in different groups to break down the barriers of not integrating with different groups. Another sad fact was my class ended up half full in the final year due to failings or drop outs. Good luck with your studies

"Maybe white kids are realising that university is a complete waste of time. The starting salaries today for those with a degree are so close to a standard salary, why would anyone want to saddle themselves with £30,000-£40,000 of debt at the start of their lives when it would be economically better to invest that £30,000 into property or long term stocks and shares, than have a piece of worthless paper with degree written on it. " I sort of agree with you. I left my career to return to education, to better myself and a change in career. During that time, the government changed as did their priorities. Myself and a number of my class mates have struggled to get a job in our field, one is a carer and I have recently got a job offer. It's not exactly what I wanted to do, but 1) it's a job, thankfully and 2) it is close to the field I graduated in. There was something in the news recently, that there are something like 50 graduates for 1 post.

True, but I am in debt by £1000's and will have to pay it back, whereas I could pay for other luxuries or necessities with the repayments. I do feel for those who have to pay for£9000 or whatever fee. I know I begrudge paying back some of my fees after some so called lectures!

"I'm doing a Social Work degree, I'll come out of it with debts of around £40k. If I get a job earning over £21k, I'll start paying the loan back, until I'm 55...I don't graduate until I'm 51, what's not to love about that ?" At £21,000 pa the student loan repayment is c£35/ month. £35 per month on a debt of £40,000 isn't a bad deal.

It's basically a stealth tax against future earnings but nothing that is unmanageable or likely to have 'the boys' knocking on your door demanding it back.

I do think some don't realise how much you have to earn before paying it back and how much per month. A friend had his written off quite a few years ago, as they had messed up the calculations or something. I hope they do that on mine

" Im doing a degree in instrumentation & control engineering ill walk in to a job at around 25-35k starting local in teesside i could choose to go to aberdeen or the rigs or abroad and earn more. University is not a waste of time its half of the useless or over populated courses that are, media & journalism etc Ive chosen my course not becuase i thought id enjoy it (luckily enough i do) but because theres serious money to be earned in it! P.s. who cares what percentage of different ethnicities are going to uni? As long as theres people going who are trying to better their lives!

As I said earlier in the thread, when I started my degree, they were crying out for people qualified in the field I was studying. By the time I graduated, the Government changed and changed their priorities thus cutting jobs left right and centre. I have been applying for jobs for 2 years now along with the ones I graduated with. Only 1 has got a job in our field. I hope you and all future graduates aren't as unfortunate as we were when it comes to getting a job.
