Are we living in an age where celebrity trivia and gossip are king ?

In an age where facts are available instantly at a touch of a button have we become lazy to learning ?

I recently watched an old final of the family quiz show " Ask the family " from the 1970's on tv.

The range of knowledge that the children had in each family re literature, geography, history and science was hugely impressive.

I can't help feeling that most modern kids would be stumped regarding most of the questions but could name Beyonce's latest fragrance, each member of the Saturdays or Jordan's latest squeeze.

Well that depends if those kids are wanting to do well in education as celebrity trivia knowledge is seldom required in exam papers

If between you you're great at both areas you can hardly fail in any quiz

That said one can easily curve round and avoid by simply refusing to watch/read any medium spewing out such dirges. I manage successfully to avoid it all

For me the absolute nadir of so called celebrity was a few years back when I stumbled on a shop being opened by some muppet with the nickname " bubble ".

There weren't many folk present but I asked an official what he was known for and she answered straight faced " he's famous for poking his tongue out on tv "

Wow! what a talent

Years and years and years but celebrity isn't just about longevity. There has to be an element of quality and class about it.

That's why (someone like) Grace Kelly, even after her death, remains a celebrity in a way Beckham will never be.

On a par with that a friends daughter went to one of those awful impersonator concerts of a bogus T rex band and went up to the singer to get his autograph at the end.

This he duly signed " Marc Bolan " and I explained the bizzare circumstance of her now being the proud owner of a fake autograph by a fake performer

To be honest…..

I think simply by debating whether someone is a celebrity or not catapults them into that bracket simply because celebrity has become such a meaningless term

I think the debate of who’s a real celebrity and whose not, has been diluted by an over willingness in the media to use the term “Star” to discribe someone in the public eye,,,

To me someone like Grace Kelly deserves the accolade of "Star" rather than celebrity as her fame lives on after her death…

So I’m sure Becks will always be remembered but I don’t know if history will honour him as a legendary Star…

Perhaps the issue is that we haven't got new types of celebrities it's just we use the word in a different way.

Beckham is clearly a celebrity but outside of the UK he's a star! He's probably the only globally recognised footballer (that is a footballer who even people who have no interest in football know.) he's got a huge degree of respect internationally and unlike most celebs his flame isn't particularly temporary. Unless he fucks up royally he will be a global household name for quite a long time.

Beyond his present celebrity status in the public eye I‘m sure some of Beckhams foot-balling techniques will be studies for many years to come….

But I don’t think the nature of football creates a nostalgic clamour in the same way great Music or great Movies transcend the passage of time..

I'm sure he will always be held in high regards and rightly so, but ask any kid now whose the greatest player that ever lived and I’d bet not many would suggest Pele or Maradona….

Kids today deserve the right to have their greats selected from today’s players and the same goes for all walks of popular culture….

Whenever I see threads on here about naming the best group or song, I'm always left wondering if people are being serious with some of the modern names put forward,…

But thats when I have to remember, that’s the music they listen to now where as I’m still happily listening to the Stars of the 60’s and 70’s

Except pele et al haven't set up global acadamies and weren't around when the media was as prevalent. He's essentially the perfect storm. Don't get me wrong football isn't my thing but, he's admired globally but not just for football and in fact probably the country he's least admired in is his own.

I totally agree with you.... he's not only a marketing dream, by all accounts a really genuine guy too....

I have a lot of respect for what he's done to help kids all over the world....

He is a Star in my eyes....

Whether or not his name will be hallowed in 200 years from now I've no idea,,,,

But while he's actively involved with the sort of philanthropic work he now does and whatever forms of self promotion he needs to do supporting his fame and ability to do that,,,,

I take my hat off to him....

Brigadoon

A celebrity is a person, who has a prominent profile and commands some degree of public fascination and influence in day-to-day media. The term is often synonymous with wealth (commonly denoted as a person with fame and fortune), implied with great popular appeal, prominence in a particular field, and is easily recognized by the general public.

(copied from Wiki)

A celebrity is basically a person well known by the public for whatever reason, it's not about whether they deserve the public's respect, it's about how well known they are. And as for some kids on a programme in the seventies knowing more about history, geography etc than kids today are perceived to know...how do you know those kids were representative of their peers? I know teenagers that are complete idiots and I know teenagers that are hardworking and clever...kids are just like real people, all different!

Yeah I think there’s something more enduring about the talents and achievements of people given the accolade of Star status back them ……

For me, She like many others of her time deserve a distinction from the diluted value of just being called celebrities.....
