There is no difference both carry risks...unprotected sex you have more chance of contracting std that cannot be passed through oral sex...however there is course a risk of contracting HIV etc if you have ulcers or cuts in your mouth

being totally honest ive often had similar thoughts on this subject too..

im still guilty of giving 'bareback' oral though

only reasoning i can think of are that mouth enzymes are stronger and kill off potential infections.. i know you can get Herpes and Chlamydia through oral sex.

"Last I heard, a girl can't get pregnant by giving oral. That's just one difference..."

Ah come on you know that's an urban myth.

Look face it sex is risky....history shows us that having sex can lead to....

Divorce, getting punched by an angry bloke unhappy about you having sex in his bed, nutters cutting their wives heads off to have sex with their new wife, getting yourself plastered over a tabloid and loads more horrible things.

Look don't have sex, its not worth the risk and if you're reading this you're probably a single bloke and not having it anyway. Be safe.

According to the health specialists that I have talked to there is a huge difference in risk factors between the two... Although actual risks are hard to pinpoint as every few people don't engage in both practices.

I never ever use condoms for oral... But mostly use for full sex..

Can I get an STI from oral sex?

Yes, STIs can be transmitted during unprotected oral sex. Oral sex is a much lower risk activity than intercourse, but there's still a possibility for transmission. Not using a condom, dental dam, or other barrier puts both partners at risk. This means that performing and receiving oral sex puts you at risk. Some STIs are more likely to be transmitted during oral sex than others, including:

Herpes

Herpes is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact with a developing or existing sore. The virus can be transmitted from mouth to genitals if the person giving oral sex has or is developing a cold sore. It can also be transmitted from genitals to mouth if the person receiving oral sex has or is developing a genital sore.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is transmitted when bacteria are present in body fluids. A person giving oral sex can get a gonorrhea infection of the throat if their partner has gonorrhea.

HIV/AIDS

For the person receiving oral sex, there's little chance of contracting HIV, although it's difficult to pinpoint when HIV has been transmitted because people rarely engage in only one type of sexual activity. In the case of fellatio (oral sex on a man), the HIV virus theoretically could gain entry from the mouth to the opening on the tip of the penis, or through an open cut or lesion on the penis. If you receive oral sex, however, you mainly expose yourself to saliva, which has negligible concentrations of HIV.

For the cunnilingus (oral sex on a woman) recipient, the chance of HIV transmission is also low, although the entire vagina is a mucous membrane through which, theoretically, the virus can be transmitted. A woman receiving cunnilingus is more at risk of getting herpes or gonorrhea from her partner than HIV.

The risk of HIV infection is greater for the partner who performs oral sex. A person performing oral sex on a woman should avoid it during her period, for menstrual blood can carry the HIV virus. Research presented at the 7th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in February of 2000 concluded that 8 of 122 cases in an HIV-transmission study were possibly attributable to performing oral sex on a man. Of these 8 infected people, some reported having had recent dental work or having cuts in their mouths, suggesting that HIV transmission by oral sex is associated with cuts, lesions, or irritation of the tissues in the mouth.

HPV

HPV is transmitted through skin to skin contact and can be transmitted from the vagina, penis or anus to the mouth or vice versa. The risk for HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers (cancers of the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue) is believed to be linked to the number of oral sex partners that someone has had.

Other STIs that can be transmitted through oral sex, although less commonly, include:

Hepatitis B

Syphilis

Chlamydia

Chancroid

To put it into perspective.. I've been doing this for 14 years... Never used a condom for oral. Do large numbers of guys.. and not caught anything...

It is possible but quite a slim chance.. I always get mouth swabs and throat ones.

People need to remember the only safe sex is no sex

Ok. Back in the happy pre HIV days, nobody gave a thought about the chances of catching something unpleasant from oral sex. If what you were proposing to get your laughing gear around didn't smell too good, you gave it a wide berth. Oddly enough, there weren't that number of instances of STIs reported. The only one that did surface was herpes, but it was hard to pin that down to oral sex.

I just wonder if people are getting overly cautious these days. The HIV angle is probably overplayed. Those with it know they have it and are on the whole reasonably responsible about preventing the further spread. Which means that the vast proportion of the population are actually pretty safe.

Using barrier contraceptives for all sexual activities seems to be a bit like taking a shower whilst wearing a raincoat and carrying an umbrella. If you want to just get an impression of what it's like without any risk, watch a porn movie and wear a glove.

Getting tested regularly won't prevent you catching anything.

It would only help you be a good 'sexual citizen' by not passing things on, but don't kid yourself, a positive test is too late for you.

Technically speaking she was a virgin if all she'd ever had was anal. Losing your virginity requires sexual intercourse, ie penis in vagina sex. Otherwise you could lose your virginity with oral sex as well. Or fingers, or tongue or vibrator or any other type of sexual activity.

Well of course getting tested doesn't actually stop you catching anything. But what getting tested does do is catch anything you may have early so it can be treated before it gets worse and so you can stop passing it on to other folk. Many STIs, if left untreated, can leave you with long term or even permanent health and/or fertility issues.

I work in a very dangerous industry. When looking at risk we have something called ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable)...my choice when having penetrative sex is to use condoms, but not for oral...I base this risk assessment on being sexually active for 30 years and only once getting a dose back in the pre AIDS days when I wasn't as sensible as I am now. As a swinger I have tests every 3 months, I'm aware that condoms are not Batfink's shield of steel but manage the risk in the way I and my playmates are comfortable with
