Is it worth the licence fee?

No adverts granted. But I prefer the other channels myself.

Is that the same bbc that spent £5m of the tax payers money 'looking into' the saville scandal? I'd rather watch shite calcify.

I stopped paying for Sky when their idea of mainstream original programming was 'Dream Team'!

BBC 3 is easily the biggest load of tripe on tv. If i wasn't paying for garbage like that, i'd be fine with the fee.

Stuff like Spooks, Luther and old Top Gear were worth the price alone.

Radio 5live, 6 music, some R4..

beeb 1,2,3 and 4 all have some excellent stuff on..

hate adverts and the banal drivel which seems to be most of what ITV is now..

there is a fixation with all things 'celebrity' in lots of the media, instant stardom and being famous which some channels funded by advertising or subscription seem to only be about..

BBC has also on some levels done the same to keep viewing figures etc but the 'dumbing down' which is prevalent in the media is a sad reflection of whats going on in the country..

worth every penny of the licence fee, despite the recent shenanigans on Saville, payments to staff for which someone should get a p45..

As far as I was aware you had to pay the licence fee if you had equipment capable of watching tv shows. So tv, pc, laptop would all mean you have to pay it

I think it's a rip off tbh.

Its if its capable of watching or recording transmitted media you need a licence- if you want to just use iplayer etc to watch legacy media then you don't

I think the way we are viewing tv has changed dramatically. I normally watch catch up and view a few episodes at once.

I was listening to the radio this morning which is what made me post my original question, sure there was no adverts, but the high amount of talking still meant no more music than any other station was played.

worth every penny and without it would be overrun by murdoch and his biased media empire, balanced jornalism and exceptional programme making.

All the documentaries, drama series etc, I rarely watch ITV as its shocking!! Channel 4 has good comedy dramas etc and as for sky it has occasionally good content but most of that are american imports.

Many great british actors get their breaks on the BBC and go on to do us proud all around the world.

The UK without the BBC would be a very dark place!!

They have to pay royalties for every song played so can only play so many per hour to keep costs down

The BBC is showing adverts, always advertising itself and not other commercial ventures, but advertisements none the less.

As above if you don't watch it live you don't need a license, if going down this route you would be wise to remove any aerials and you cannot have Sky or Virgin etc.

The inspectors that knock on your door have no right of entry so you can just ask them to leave your property, and if you look on youtube, once you start filming them the tend to disappear sharpish... Why? Because the scare tactics and bullying methods they use are not strictly legal is why...

So if you where to carry on watching TV as normal without a license and then tell any TV inspectors to f**k off there really isn't a lot they can do to prove that you are watching live TV.

If TV Licensing believes you're watching "live TV" without a licence, enquiry officers may pay you a visit. They don't have the power to enter your home without permission, but they can apply for a search warrant to enter if there are reasonable grounds to believe a household is watching TV illegally.

There are many people who have so little else going on their lives that they just couldn't bear to be without Eastenders or other such BBC tripe for the few minutes an advert break takes. Sad, really.

Do you work for tv licensing?

How many warrants are actually issued? What is reasonable grounds to believe you are watching TV?

Watch some of the many youtube videos on the subject and see how unsuccessful the inspectors are. If you do not let them into your property what are the reasonable ground for obtaining a warrant. The inspectors get paid by performance so they will be pressurising people to pay up.

I had an inspector round when I stopped buyiny a licence. He was a nice bloke checked that all I was using my tv for was watching dvd's and gaming, in fact he seemed more worried about if I had a big dog I was going to set on him. I consider th beeb value for money, thinking about just how much you get.

South Devon

BBC 4 provides a stream of excellent, diverse, and stimulating stuff, counterbalanced by the kind of vacuous dirge the Beeb specialises in, ie the Oneshow, Breakfast news.

I'm sure you'll get over it.

Maybe you just copy and pasted it from the tv licensing website.

If you have no TV, no laptop, no tablet you still have to pay because most smart phones can get it with a half decent connection!

"If you have no TV, no laptop, no tablet you still have to pay because most smart phones can get it with a half decent connection!"

Only if you are watching live broadcast TV on it - this also includes watching it on the internet at the same time as its being broadcast.

Watching a programme via VoD services, Lovefilm, Netflix etc and that program is NOT being broadcast live over the air does NOT require a licence.

There is a really good article over at Money Saving Expert on this, outlining all the rules about when and when you don't need a licence. Its the source of information I've been using as I have no affiliation, connection or otherwise to the TV Licensing authority

it doesn't just apply to watching live tv..it also applies to recording live tv. thus you can't watch just a second later because you are still watching a live broadcast.. you don't need a licence if you only watch catch up..iplayer 4od etc but they don't show till usually at least a day later. wouldn't bother me if bbc showed adverts. i almost always record and then fast forward.. except live sport..sport should be watched live.. unless it's highlights.

If something is shown on the internet 1 or 2 seconds after it was broadcast on 'live' tv then it is not live tv it is a delayed broadcast and you do not require a license. If you record live tv to watch it later you do require a license.

I direct all BBC queries here although Salford might be a better bet for you.

BBC London, 2nd Floor, Egton Wing, BBC Broadcasting House, Portland Place, London, W1A 1AA
