I am just about to take my Mum to Hospital.. She is to have on op to remove cancer from her breast and also 3 Lymph glands.

I am not to sure what expect really as she has kept a hell of a lot about this to herself !! the old dear lol.

I am obviously going to talk to the consultant when I get there

just wondered if anyone had possibly gone thru the same thing or similar

Not been through it myself but firstly hope all goes well for your mum and secondly they're currently running a breast cancer storyline on Coronation Street. There are also numerous sources for information available online that can help. Just google and you'll get all the information you will need. I'd suggest sticking to cancer charities as the best resource. Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Jimmy, each hospital has there own “in house” family support service, maybe contact them and see if they can assist you with some moral support, not saying you need it, but sometimes it's handy to know there is someone in the background if required, they may also have contacts with organisations in your area who offer a similar scheme.

The consultant / secretary should be able to point you in the right direction.

My dad had Non Hodgkins Lymphoma which affects the lymph glands as well as any other organ too. This is one of the most treatable cancers if caught in the early stages. Good luck, and just remember we have some of the best surgeons in the world here and our hospitals are staffed with great people. We're sure your mom will be ok

Jimmy - Have a word with my Mrs, she went through the same thing (Not the lymph nodes) about 4 years ago.

If you have anything in particular that you'd like to know, PM us and she'll attempt to help you wherever she can

And previously she also worked for the same department at The Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle.

There is one lady who posts regularly on the forum who has personal experience of this ...she is a close friend and a battler. I would hope to have half her courage if it were to happen to me.

ask the staff at the hospital...or at your mums GP surgery to put you in touch with the local McMillan nurse.....they are a great source of support and information, and will visit your mum at home ater her op......hope all goes well.....E x

Hi Hunni,

So sorry to here this about ur mum but i know u and ur family will be a great support to her but there is also help out there for familys of ppl going through any type of cancer ul probably be feeling quite raw at the monent trying to take things in and understand whats going to happen in the future and i know from experiance ul be feeling very scared but i hope like me things will turn out well....

I have myself had cervical cancer in 2002 had have great support from family and from my care team at the hospital im continuing to do well xxxxx

Hi ya hun. My dad had his kidney taken out a year a go due to cancer. I found it best to make a list of questions before i went with them. I used to sit with my parents and ask them what questions they would want asking and spend the time listening to their concerns. You want to know lots of things, after care, sucess rate etc etc and its so hard to forget stuff while there. But as someone has already said you get assigned a cancer care specialist nurse who usually gives you a contact number so that you can ask things if anything crops up.
